Academic Consortium member, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is dedicated to creating person-centered solutions to best meet each patient’s needs, and new research reveals an opportunity for Ohio State to lead the way in improving care for patients with sickle cell disease. Senior study author Maryanna Klatt, PhD, clinical professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and study first author Janet Childerhose, PhD, research assistant professor of Internal Medicine, found that the most profound source of distress for these patients is the anticipation before going to and time spent at acute care centers to manage their chronic pain. Next steps include considering how clinical settings may be altered to better address and reduce patient distress. In the face of a growing heart failure (HF) epidemic the need for innovative and inclusive medical device therapies has never been more urgent. At Abbott, we believe improving patient representation in clinical trials is not just good science—it’s essential. Our recent study with the Heart Failure Collaboratory, published in JACC: Heart Failure, revealed significant disparities in early adoption of the CardioMEMS HF System – including underrepresentation of women and African Americans, and regional disparities in the South where HF hospitalizations are highest. The importance of considering race, ethnicity, gender, and regionality from the earliest stages of R&D cannot be overstated. This includes developing new clinical research models, diversifying our pool of research coordinators, and establishing trial centers in underrepresented communities. While there is much work ahead, the progress we’ve made and ongoing collaborative efforts are encouraging. Together, we can ensure our clinical trials better reflect the populations we aim to serve.
