No topic has been more polarizing to the UK's gambling industry than the proposed financial risk checks. Last month, the United Kingdom's Gambling Commission shared info on the next steps for roll out, and the changes it would make following last year's consultation period. In this blog, we cover the main changes, and explore how financial risk checks can help protect vulnerable players and prevent problem gambling.
Why 6 financial risk check indicators are better than 2.

A lot of interesting discussion of various problems and potential solutions (and workarounds to those solutions) where financial institution customers may have gambling problems. Be sure to read the "bet now pay later" discussion, which I found surprising (but on reflection is a predictable development). The whole field raises many philosophical as well as practical issues. #banking #compliance

Yet more proof of the urgent need to bring public health reform and regulation to the gambling industry.
Online betting companies talk about responsible gambling. What happens when someone can't stop themselves, and apps keep giving credits and offers? Journalistically, it has been hard to get real answers to that question that go beyond companies' stated commitments to responsible gambling. A psychiatrist with two boys dealing with the stress of divorce and pandemic isolation started playing a bingo-style matching game and ended up in six-figure debt. Kavita Fischer shared her experience with Katherine Sayre. The resulting piece, beautifully and carefully rendered, is a must read for anyone trying to understand gambling problems and the role companies play.

The odds are slim that you’ll be waiting with bated breath today for news from a Westminster Media Forum, but if you work with gambling brands, there’s a lot at stake. There are some phenomenal statistics related to the gambling industry, but the most telling one is that since the inception of the National Lottery, almost half of all adults now gamble once a month. And yet, the Lottery isn’t officially considered gambling, doesn’t come under the jurisdiction of the Gambling Commission, and will get little or no attention in today’s discussions. If they come into play, then last years’ proposals of a statutory levy and a gambling ombudsman may mean the sector has to adapt an awful lot, but it’s a safe bet to say it’ll all mean little to the Lotto. https://lnkd.in/gADP6rfs

Gamble responsibly. Your piggy bank will oink in approval! Gambling should always be fun. If it isn't, then a significant problem has occurred. Affiliates, when informing readers of the importance of responsible gambling, please be genuine and heartfelt. As I keep saying, don't just include a section on responsible gambling as a box ticking exercise. Empty words have no value in today's oversaturated market. Too many of us in the industry treat responsible gambling as an afterthought. We tell them we care, but it's time to prove it. Self-exclusion options, deposit limits, and reality checks are all great tools for helping those prone to problem gambling. Make sure your readers know they exist! Unfortunately, there isn't a great solution to this issue now. This is why I think the affiliate industry needs to come together and start talking more about the impact of responsible gambling. I want your opinion. Does our industry do enough to promote responsible gambling?
