Imagine a scene set in a bustling city during Ramadan. It's midday, and the streets are alive with activity. Amidst the hustle and bustle, a Muslim man or woman is seen diligently working at their job. They're focused and determined, despite the physical challenges of fasting. Perhaps the person is in an office, typing away at their computer with dedication. Or maybe they're outdoors, engaged in physical labor under the hot sun. Despite the fasting, their commitment to their work remains unwavering. What are some challenges they will face? Physical Fatigue: Fasting from dawn until dusk can lead to physical fatigue, especially during long work hours. Without food or water, individuals may experience decreased energy levels and productivity. Dehydration: The inability to drink water during daylight hours can lead to dehydration, especially in hot climates or physically demanding jobs. This can affect concentration and overall well-being. Decreased Concentration: Hunger and thirst can affect concentration levels, making it challenging to focus on tasks at hand. This can impact work performance and productivity. Shift Work: For Muslims working in industries that require shift work, such as healthcare or hospitality, managing fasting schedules can be particularly challenging. Shift timings may conflict with prayer times or disrupt the fasting routine. Social Pressures: Work environments may not always be accommodating or understanding of religious practices like fasting. Muslims may face social pressures to participate in work-related events that involve food or drink during fasting hours. Lack of Rest: Ramadan involves additional prayers and spiritual activities during the night, which can result in decreased sleep and rest. This lack of rest can compound the challenges of fasting while working during the day. Longer Work Hours: In some cultures or countries, work hours may not be adjusted to accommodate Ramadan, leading to longer workdays without breaks for iftar (the evening meal to break the fast) or prayer. Despite these challenges, many Muslims successfully navigate work responsibilities while fasting during Ramadan through careful planning, prioritising tasks, seeking support from employers and colleagues, and maintaining a strong sense of dedication to their faith. Employers can also play a role in facilitating a supportive work environment by offering flexible schedules, providing designated prayer spaces, and showing understanding towards fasting employees. The battle for customers has moved a notch higher as the global economy transforms into an experiential economy. More and more customers are seeking quality experience from service providers. Even those offering tangible products are being challenged to incorporate the experience component. The competition is very stiff in the larger service sector and moreso cruise industry. Contemporary customers are increasing moving towards aqua experience as tourists embrace cruising as alternative holiday destination. Accordingly, top cruise lines are investing in talent management . This has seen the cruise lines recruit top talents from across the globe. Kenya hospitality professionals are among the most sought after by cruise recruiters. One of the biggest biggest beneficiaries are Kenya Utalii College graduates. They are now part of workforce of leading cruise lines. Their performance has been quite exemplary. I congratulate Utalii alumni for raising our flag high in the cruise industry.

The increased demand for hospitality professionals by the cruise industry has once again raised the profile of Kenya Utalii College as trainer of choice for skilled. manpower . The College was established more than four decades ago to train skilled personnel for the hospitality and tourism industry. With its programmes tailored along the Swiss model of hospitality and tourism training, the graduates of the College possess internationally recognised qualifications which are hotly sought after by global brands. By virtue of their international recognition ,many of its alumni are found in leading hospitality firms across the globe. It is not a surprise that when the cruise industry recruiters came to Kenya in search of trained manpower, KUC was their first point of call. The first batch of the College alumni who secured cruise jobs did not disappoint. They demonstrated high degree of service excellence in their respective cruise lines. Consequently, more cruise lines flocked the country to recruit skilled personnel. Today, the global cruise industry has a significant number of Kenyan professionals courtesy of the College. Reports from the industry show that every reputable cruise line has Utalii graduates in its workforce I hail the College for opening the cruise job market for Kenyan youths.
