New York City’s NYC Department of Social Services, NYC Human Resources Administration, and the NYC Department of Homeless Services deliver billions of dollars in goods and services each year. Many of our programs are delivered directly by our employees, but much of the work we do is in partnership with our Human Service Providers, Non-Profits, and Community-Based Organizations. Our M/WBE Program Team works closely with these organizations to build contract pipelines that offer opportunities for the City’s Minority- and/or Women-Owned Business Enterprises to join us in our shared mission to support those in need. Matchmaking is one of our most important tools for supporting local business development and bringing M/WBEs into the service of our client community. In this month’s M/WBE In the Mix, we meet Alyssa Sanchez-Cook of Samaritan Daytop Village, Inc. who understands the value of a good conversation. If you’re an M/WBE, or think you might qualify for certification, please email us at mwbe@dss.nyc.gov or visit our M/WBE Resource Page at https://lnkd.in/gaKF7NPe. We’d be happy to connect you with information about resources, upcoming events, and opportunities to contract with us and our partners.

Great insights from Leah York, CAE today. 💸 "Salary competition is the foremost factor affecting the ability of nonprofits to recruit and retain employees, with 72.2% of respondents highlighting its impact." 🚩 Entry level positions are the hardest to fill. 🤔 In my experience, more often than not, nonprofits are not paying a #livingwage for these positions. ❓ Want help with #sustainably #strategicplanning and #fundraising for a living wage? 💻 Send me a DM and let's talk! ⁉ Want help with your search? Building bridges, not walls - A fresh perspective on community engagement. Often, when businesses turn their attention to community outreach, they get caught up in the idea of 'us vs them'. They see themselves as separate - the benefactors, offering support to those in need. But what if we changed this perspective? Community engagement is not about charity, but connection. It's not about throwing resources at a problem but standing shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors and facing issues together. This means real dialogue, genuine collaboration and shared goals. In my experience with church leadership and beyond, I've seen the profound impact of this shift. When we start seeing ourselves as equal parts of the community - not separated by walls of difference but connected by bridges of commonality - magic happens. Resources are used more effectively, projects have greater impact and both parties learn and grow in the process. Let's break down walls and build more bridges. Let's turn community outreach into next-level engagement. Join hands with your community today. It may just be the best business decision you've ever made.

Helping you to build ethical and effective online communities, and protect and improve your wellbeing. 16 years experience in building communities. Founder of Good Community consultancy.
Respect for expertise matters. I see you: non-profit community leads, peer support community managers, patient and carer online community professionals. You run specialist communities. Your knowledge of peer support matters. This type of online gathering isn't the same as other types of community. The problems your community faces are different. The culture you foster is unique. People are unwise to brush aside your perspective. People shouldn't dismiss your subject matter expertise in the topic you've been in the trenches working in. People shouldn't tell you to follow advice given to a completely different type of organisation. They shouldn't assume all communities are the same. You've done the work. I see you. Your type of community needs specialist advice and support from someone who knows the challenges you face. With 12 years of professional experience in this area, I can help. Get in touch if you'd like to talk.
