At HireJustNow, we often encounter single parents, especially single moms, who face the challenging demands of balancing being the breadwinner and managing their children's activities. In my previous roles as a labour law consultant, I had the unfortunate task of conducting disciplinary hearings where these scenarios often clashed with employers' demands. Balancing the need for in-office operational efficiency with understanding personal circumstances was always difficult, especially when remote or flexible policies were not allowed. In South Africa, single mothers are crucial to the economy. They bring valuable skills but need flexibility to attend to their children while earning a decent income. When we started HireJustNow., one of our goals was to provide a lifeline for moms who needed the remote model to support their kids and manage their situations. On the plus side, we are also seeing that many international employers are now able to access that talent pool, and we love playing that intermediary role as an EOR. P.S. A couple of years ago I published this blog post about the language of social work job adverts. To write it I read through loads of job ads about social workers’ responsibilities for “reviewing waiting lists for prioritisation and screening”, “screening and risk assessing cases”, “assessing service users”, “reviewing placements” “carrying a caseload of service users”, “managing complex cases” and “protecting and enhancing the lives of the most vulnerable.” Awful. Barely any mention of people, relationships, rights, advocacy, trust, compassion, hope. As I said in the post, for a profession that is (or should be) fundamentally about people and relationships, most adverts were about processes and transactions. There was little evidence of the human qualities required in social workers, and even fewer references to the unique identity and humanity of the people they were being recruited to serve. I couldn’t find a standout example of a job advert which really conveyed the purpose and possibility of the social work role, and the passion and principles required… so I wrote my own, included at the end of the blog post. A few months ago Alex Townsend asked if he could pinch the job ad I’d written, and of course I said yes. Yesterday Alex told me he’d used it to recruit social workers and had a brilliant response to the ad, with far more applications than usual. And it’s not just social work, is it? It’s easy enough to agree organisational values like collaborative, inclusive, innovative, empowering or caring……..but how good are we at making sure those values are refelcted in job adverts, role descriptions, person specs, training courses, appraisal and promotions? My experience (across a range of organisations) is that we tend to put far more emphasis on the “process” skills than the “relationship” skills - often even in the roles where relationships are absolutely key……
