Out of the Archives: Today, in 1916, skilled workers were reinforcing the Catskill Aqueduct’s Eastview Tunnel to keep it watertight and ready to carry water along the rest of its 92-mile journey to the taps of NYC just like it still does today! Amazing, NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP). I live along the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) trail in Hastings-on-Hudson that goes all the way to Croton Dam, along the MTA Hudson Metro North train line. For some eho may not be familiar, the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park is a linear park which runs from Van Cortlandt Park at the Bronx County/City of Yonkers border to the Croton Dam in Cortlandt. Best thing ever for all New Yorkers to enjoy, and learning about the history of our water supply. On a personal note, I feel it's function and historic impact every time am on that trail. Of course we have the New Croton Dam which I've explored too. Great trails/hikes to explore in segments.
Oh the irony.
The air monitor back then was canary!
Magnificent photo showing the raw power of unsafe work practices and the ambition to expand and grow NYC!!! Magnificent!!! 😄
That’s so cool! I love these historic photos
Inspiring!
When the crown started to drop the repair was one of the earliest uses of compressed air mining. That reach has been out of service since 2012.
