Bus lanes are for buses! On 8/19, drivers will begin receiving violations on 14 Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus routes equipped with Automated Camera Enforcement. It’s great news. However, why did it take so long to implement such a program? I’m a New York City Transit Authority retiree. I’m living in the Hudson Valley now and take Metro North into Grand Central Terminal. I ride the subways and buses quite often when I’m in the city. As a former employee, who’s father used to drive a bus for the NYCTA, I just can’t stand the inconsiderate drivers who drive in bus lanes, cut buses off, try to actually pass buses on the right. This makes the bus operators’ jobs that much more difficult. Take it from me, I know what a difficult job this is. Although I worked the subways, I knew what my dad went through with the crazy drivers. The stresses involved in maneuvering the big vehicle safety through the streets, working with the customers, trying to keep a semblance of a schedule is enough without this added stuff. The governor nixed the congestion pricing, for now, anyway. However, this is most likely the next best thing. Thank you all in the MTA and city administration who made this happen. And, please, always remember and respect the people who work in the field safely carrying millions every day to the very best of their abilities.

I know about the bike problem in the city first hand. One day last year I was almost struck by a Chinese delivery food man who was driving his bicycle the WRONG WAY down a side street. Two months ago, I was on my way to a doctor appointment, when on East 54th Street and Madison Avenue a kind woman actually stuck out her hand to stop me from crossing 52nd Street. If not for her, I would have been stuck by a speeding electric bike that went through a red light crossing Madison Avenue. The was an article in the NYT about this. Many New Yorkers have been struck by bikes, quite a number of them seniors just crossing the street. There have also been fatalities. I understand that the city is cracking down. Concerning this bus lane article, I’ve also seen bikes in bus lanes when they have their own bike paths on the same avenue. Responding to the gentleman about another money grab from the city. I understand for sure the delivery truck dilemma. However, I don’t believe that this MTA bus lane program is just another money grab. The congestion pricing was stopped. There’s got to be a way for mass transit buses to be able to maneuver through the streets of the boroughs, particularly crowded Manhattan.

Another money 💵 grab from the city. There's no place for 🚚 trucks to make deliveries. Not enough places for 🚖 taxi/car service for pickup and dropping off. Trucks making deliveries will have to pass the tickets onto the consumer. That means your food,clothing, and anything else we need will go up in price. Just another way to push out motor vehicles.

Continuing, it’s unfortunate that transit planners never incorporated the alternative mode of street transit, light rail, for our city. 40 cities in the U.S., and hundreds in major cities around the world have light rail trams where there is a dedicated right-of-way for rail vehicles. I’ve read articles from people who said that this is not possible in Manhattan. Well, if it’s good enough for major cities like Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon, San Diego, Dallas, etc., it’s feasible for New York. The same naysayers and budget cutters prevented the construction of the 2nd Avenue Subway down the east side from 125th Street to the Battery, a subway that was to be completed in the 1950s. That certainly would have alleviated the overcrowding on the Lexington Avenue IRT and M15 bus routes. Poor planning equals major congestion.

It's about time they get activated! Enforcement is key to support the intent of the bus lanes. I often see School Buses, Private Bus Charters and shipping trucks on these bus lanes. They will keep doing it because they are not penalized for it. The bus lanes were created to improve bus times. Keep up the good work DOT!!

The city should take over the MTA so the money goes to the city where needed not in there pockets where they buy things at the end of the year to show that they have no money the MTA are thrives of NYC trust me I worked for them for a lot of years

All vehicles should remember bus drivers have to cover there right side they don’t even do that and they run though red lights

I wouldn’t even pay for a bus ride with the service they give you guys sucks remember they are federal funded so fuck the MTA

Bullshit the buses don’t use the lane. They take up two lanes when driving and I thought they should be driving 20 miles per hour they don’t 90 pct do 45 to 55 they are reckless
