NYC World Trade Center Visit Depending on your age, you probably have memories of where you were and what you were doing on the morning of 9/11/2001. However, those memories, as is only natural, have probably faded, unless maybe you were actually there that day. I had an opportunity to visit the 9/11 museum last weekend in NYC. And my memoires had in fact faded. The museum resurrected those memories and all that that event entailed: how individuals responded – whether first responders, people in the buildings, the passengers and crew who made sure flight 93 did not reach its target – the physical destruction and deaths, and so much more. It was so powerful. It is a remarkable remembrance of a terrible time and loss, and a testament to what can be the best (and worst) aspects of humankind. And sadly, the world continues to suffer from some of the worst nature of humankind. However, I strongly encourage everyone who has the opportunity to visit the 9/11 museum, but have not yet done so, to make the visit. Whether you have memories of that day or not. It is well worth it. https://lnkd.in/ef6qWmGA https://lnkd.in/ehYQx_yr (Scroll down for video - a short video w images and voices of the day) https://lnkd.in/euw2fJzN (History Channel reviews the days chronology and events)

#ListeningSession 6 - GCF’s President and CEO, Matthew Randazzo and Chief Impact Officer, Rasheda Malcolm-Cromwell hosted an open forum with organizations in the arts and culture sector that enrich our region through creative endeavors, employment and arts education. During the conversation, attendees expressed a clear need for more funding and support for staffing and operations. Additional takeaways include a desire for more artists to be at the decision-making table, better access to boardrooms and private sector spaces, and greater recognition of the positive effects the arts have on our regional economy. How do you think we can best serve our region’s artists and cultural institutions? What opportunities do the arts bring to the region and how can we ensure these opportunities persist?

In a recent report commissioned by Arts Council England (ACE), a stark reality has emerged – local authorities in England have slashed per capita investment in museums and galleries by 23% from 2009-10 to 2022-23. This translates to a profound real-terms decrease of 42.1%, adjusting for inflation. Concerningly, museums and galleries suffered disproportionate cuts compared to overall local authority services, with a 22.7% real-terms decrease in total service expenditure per capita. The cuts have disproportionately affected more disadvantaged local authorities, with almost 75% investing less than £5 per capita. This data paints a stark picture for the future of our civic museums – now more than ever, we must champion their vital role in our communities. More of this! Thought-provoking, engaging, community centered, and a key dialogue that needs to happen across the U.S. " Addressing contemporary housing challenges faced by Santa Monica and the region, the exhibition further explores affordable housing, support systems for those experiencing homelessness, equity and inclusion, and the importance of historic preservation in maintaining the city’s cultural identity." https://lnkd.in/eQ4b-mPq

Eye-tracking research helps Indianapolis museum steer guests in the right direction "Prominent signage is key when navigating a new space. This is especially true when the majority of a location’s visitors are parents or guardians who are attempting to guide themselves while caring for young children. In partnership with the University of Southern Indiana, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis used eye-tracking to determine how effective their wayfinding signage truly was for first-time guests." In the spirit of “sharpening the saw”, I participated in a Design Thinking DC field session for the National Museum of American History this week. Question: How might we create a more inviting and engaging Constitution Ave entrance? So great to flex my DT muscles IRL with creative designers! #designthinking #smithsonian #creativity #brainstorming #prototyping
What a thrill for our DT:DC community to partner with the amazing Mike Denison, Head of Design for the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History, to reimagine the Constitution Avenue entrance of the museum to make it a more inviting, connected, and inclusive public space. A big thank you to our brilliant workshop leaders, Evan Chan and Fabiola Alvarez Yurcisin who spent hours preparing an insightful and inspiring experience and to Caitlin Anderson for managing all the details. The energy and creativity of the group was contagious. Here's a glimpse of what we achieved: 🔹 Fresh, innovative ideas to enhance the visitor experience 🔹 Collaborative designs that reflect the museum's rich heritage 🔹 A renewed sense of community and shared vision Finally, a huge shoutout to everyone who participated and contributed their unique perspectives. #DesignThinking #Innovation #MuseumDesign #Smithsonian #Collaboration #Creativity

🖼💡 Here's a great idea: To save museums, treat them like highways. Did you know? “Culture in the United States employs about five million people and pumps about $1 trillion into the economy annually.” In their guest essay for The New York Times, co-authors Laura Raicovich (former director of the Queens Museum), and Laura Hanna (board chair for Powerhouse Arts), argue, “We need to treat culture as equal to other forms of national infrastructure, as important to our national well-being as safe roads, clean drinking water and accessible utilities…. New funding would boost local economies, cultivate a more equitable arts sector, and promote and protect arts organizations,” they say.
