Culture & Workplace Consultant // Author of The Open Culture Handbook: Five questions to drive engagement and innovation
Resistance is Futile: Surrender to the Algorithm (But watch this first!) In a 2015 Chronicle of Higher Education article, "Is design thinking the new liberal arts,?" Peter Miller explores the relevance of design thinking as a potential supplement/alternative to liberal arts education. That hope turned out to be short lived. As the world puts the finishing touches on its requiem for IDEO and design thinking, we are obliged to accept that ethnography, participative co-creation, UX thinking, prototyping, human-centered solutions, and organic innovation just aren't quite tough enough anymore. Big data, deduction, algorithms, AI, predictability, and ever-advancing earnings per share and dividend yields feed the appetites of shareholders and the business press, whose interests are increasinly unassailable. Perhaps it is hopeless romanticism, but IMHO Tim Brown's 2009 Ted Talk is still worth a watch. Thank you IDEO for all that you've contributed to the world! #designthinking

Squarepeg. Thinking 🤔 I'm introducing this to demonstrate my recognition of design features that disadvantage or cause added stress to the user. Rather than accepting and putting up with poor design features, we need to be addressing and rethinking how we can reduce added stress, and in this case possible injury (particularly for individuals with Dyspraxia). This short footage highlights the revolving door, many of you will focus on that alone. As a Neuroinclusive designer I recognise several areas that add to sensory overwhelm and stress. We won't move forward if we sit and say nothing. We can design better. #neuroinclusion #neuroinclusivedesign #betterbuildings

The design sprint will help young people explore topics such as loss and grief in a way that helps them to understand the challenges, and design solutions that can help themselves and others in the future. “I like being told that I am wrong, that's when I learn” — Don Norman It was an honor to participate in a fireside chat with Don Norman 😀. I was moved because there were so many insights in this session, which was truly amazing. ---- Most Important Takeaways: 🎨 Design is not art. Art is not Design. Design is about solving the right problems of real people. 👫 Humanity-centered design focuses on benefiting all humanity instead of solely prioritizing corporate profit. ∞ Today's design education should focus more on integrating a wider range of disciplines, such as history, economics, politics, business, etc., because the purpose of design often encompasses them. ❗Engineers, scientists are also problem-solvers, but good designers find the right problems by constantly asking, "Is this a good question?" 💬 Don believes that the future design lies in conversational interactions, moving beyond traditional interfaces. —— I greatly respect Don Norman not only because he is a pioneer in human-centered design but also because he is a true INTERDISCIPLINARY expert and lifelong learner, which is exactly what I aspire to be. I also recommend the Don Norman Design Award (DNDA), if you are starting your venture for the planet and humanity, go check it out! Thank you Felix Lee and adplist.org for hosting this inspiring chat. #humancentereddesign #uxdesign #designcommunity #designer #productdesign

🧠 I need help with my capstone project! My 4th-year capstone project, the very last project at Emily Carr as an Interaction Design Student, is looking into Policy Prototyping. I want to explore Participatory policy design and policy design prototyping methods and frameworks. And I am hoping that talented designers here on Linkedin, as well as people who are working in the policy space, can point me to some resources. 🌟 So if you have any examples of design and policy, policy prototyping frameworks or case studies, or just any related articles or comments, please drop them below. I would also love to talk more about #PolicyDesign

🌟 Exciting Highlights from Our Recent Workshop at Design Factory! 🌟 We are delighted to share a special glimpse into the vibrant atmosphere of our latest HACKATHON event at Design Factory. Our 2-minute video captures the essence of innovation and collaboration that unfolded during the workshop. As Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, wisely stated: "We need diversity of thought in the world to face the new challenges." 👩💻👨💻 A small group of participants from diverse backgrounds came together to push the boundaries of what they know, turning abstract ideas into impactful solutions. The HACKATHON provides the environment in which students and industry partners can combine their information and turn it into actionable knowledge. We’re not just coding; we’re coding for a cause. 📹 Watch our video to see how intense brainstorming sessions, practical prototyping workshops, and insightful discussions led to the development of exceptional projects. Witness the energy and commitment that our participants brought to the table, making every moment of the event not only educational but truly inspirational. 🙌 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, and a big shout-out to our expert speakers and mentors Mario Bosslau, Cindy Fernandez, Andreas Schneider, Chantelle Henn who provided invaluable guidance and expertise. Vice President of Digital Experience at Modus. Innovator willing to take risks, fail, iterate, learn, share, teach, and design to engage.
Humanity-centered design: once you see it, you can’t unsee it. In his book *Design for a Better World* and accompanying IxDF course, Don Norman challenges us to shift from user-centered to humanity-centered design. This mindset asks us to go beyond addressing immediate needs and consider the broader implications of our work. Designers must think this way even when solving for a singular problem—our solutions should account for their impact on users, communities, the environment, and the planet. By seeking diverse perspectives within affected communities and minimizing harm in every way possible, we can create designs that not only meet needs but do so responsibly. This approach, in my view, enhances both the value and accountability of the design thinking process. #humanitycentereddesign #designforabetterworld IxDF - The Interaction Design Foundation
