Stop blending in and start standing out.
Become the 'Purple Cow.'
(like Seth Godin yells out )
To be remarkable you gotta break through the noise.
A great example of this—
Kanye West's ad from this year's Super Bowl.
While others poured millions into slick productions…
Kanye did something unique.
Unexpected and unusual.
He filmed the ad in his car.
On his phone.
No special effects.
No fancy production.
Not even good lighting.
What happened next?
$20 million in sales.
He chose to be different.
He chose to be noticed.
And that’s what being remarkable means.
To be a purple cow is to embrace risk.
It’s about grabbing attention and making a statement.
Because ideas that spread win.
PS: What's your ‘purple cow’ moment?
To paraphrase:
- If you go to the board/committee and propose to reduce the price because a product is not selling, you'll get the approval in about 5min.
- If you go to that same board/committee and propose to increase the price and do a weird advertising campaign, because the product is not selling, you'll probably be thrown out of a window.
However, sometimes, it's the latter that'll increase the sales and the former is going to decrease the sales even more...
I've literally put up about 50,000, probably 100,000 posters or flyers through the years. For a long time, it was the number one way we got students at Pan Theater.
We let people know about our performing troupes and shows, posting anywhere from San Jose up to Sonoma and Napa.
To be honest, I just find making posters, looking at posters, and going in all the coffee shops to be a lot of fun. That's how we started really growing as a theater—through posters and flyers.
If you have an improv class, improv theater, acting classes, writing classes, or anything like that, everyone talks about digital marketing like Facebook and Google ads, but posters and flyers work too.
If you have the time to distribute them yourself or use a flyer service like Thumbtack Bugle, they can help get the word out.
Over time, it compounds, people start to remember you, and your presence grows. As you're building up your classes, shows, and everything else, definitely consider flyers and posters.
They've done wonders for Pan Theater. Even these days, as we move more and more towards digital, we're still doing a good portion of our marketing with flyers and posters.
Checkout the Thumbtack Bugle if you want to reach the San Francisco Bay Area market with posters and flyers.

Remember those "most interesting person in the world" commercials? Well, I love this turn-around that Amber A. Johnson, Ph.D. offers on the idea of trying to be interesting.
It's really salient for me as an introvert who struggled early in my career with networking and events that I thought required me to be interesting and good at small talk. Trying to be interesting or impressing others had me clam up with self-doubt and made these events exhausting!
What transformed my experience and enjoyment of socializing was shifting FROM being worried about how I'd be interesting or perceived TO being interested in others.
Focusing on learning about them really helped me with my ease, comfort, confidence, authenticity, and relationship building.
How might this turn-around support you? And if you're interested in other leadership nuggets, check Amber and her newsletter out!

Let’s stop treating 'Red Carpets' as the Holy grail (Maybe it is) But in this changing era? The real flex is selling smart. Striking the balance between creative integrity and commercial appeal doesn’t betray your vision—it amplifies it.
Whether it’s cinema-worthy, Made for TV, bingeable on YouTube, or in an indigenous language content that is loved by grandmas, it all boils down to AUDIENCE. Forget the red carpet. The true spotlight is where your story connects. 🎯 Sometimes, that's all you need, and your village people will back down.

Being straightforward is an asset for producers in 95% of jobs. In the celebrity industrial complex, it’s a bit different.
For many entertainment producers, the entire pretense of the red carpet exercise is predicated around NOT being straightforward. The producer has to build up to asking the celebrity questions that the celeb does not necessarily want to answer. Thus, the celeb is on guard from the beginning of every interview.
Well, how then, in what is set up to be a contentious dynamic, does a reporter ingratiate him/herself to the talent enough to get the soundbites he/she wants?
The same way people should act with everyone they meet:
-Be friendly.
-Make jokes.
-Create a familiarity context.
-Use genuine praise and not false flattery.
-Be authentically inquisitive.
People love to be appreciated. Be generous with compliments, but make sure that the compliments are sincere. Always strive for authenticity in every facet of what you do.
We explore all this and more in this newest Carpet Trash featuring an interview I did with Daniel Radcliffe where he correctly predicted the future of the Potterverse.
I hope you enjoy. Don’t forget to share, comment, subscribe, and of course smash!
