It’s #BackToSchool season in New York! Even with all the excitement for students returning to classes, it can be a particularly stressful time for their families making sure they’re ready to begin the school year. This is especially true for families navigating the special education system — and even more so if they’re also contending with poverty or other obstacles. While federal law guarantees that children with disabilities can receive appropriate special education services and supports, a right is only as good as it is accessible, and for low-income families, navigating this incredibly complex system requires time and resources that can put it altogether out of reach. Over the next few weeks, NYLAG will highlight how our Special Education Unit works with families to ensure their children can meaningfully #AccessSpecialEd, and how important that is for students, families, and communities alike. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, learn more about the unit here: https://lnkd.in/ePeKnwhN

Thank you to eSchool News for this great piece! Read their full article from Kara Stern, Ph.D. to learn more about creating an inclusive environment that supports attendance and engagement for all students. Chronic absenteeism is a growing concern for students with disabilities, with rates rising significantly in recent years. To address this challenge, schools need to develop an "Equitable Blueprint"—a comprehensive framework to create inclusive, supportive learning environments. Key components of this blueprint include: ☑ Leveraging data-driven strategies to identify and address specific challenges ☑ Fostering a sense of belonging for students with disabilities ☑ Collaborating closely with families through two-way communication By implementing these strategies, schools can work towards ensuring every student, regardless of ability, has access to the equitable education they deserve.

In the first of five reports published as part of our Charter School Equity, Growth, Quality, and Sustainability Study, we examine how state actors can strengthen charter schools’ commitment to educating students with disabilities. To date, state actions have been relatively limited and largely compliance-focused. The lack of state action likely results from a mix of the complexity behind school accountability systems and the political challenges that emerge when state actors engage in charter school policy making. Many parents in Texas struggle to find a full-day child care provider who will accept a child with a disability and educate them alongside their nondisabled peers. This challenge can cause children with disabilities to either enroll in early learning programs later than their nondisabled peers or miss out on early learning opportunities altogether. Texas should create more inclusive early learning options for young children with disabilities. Texas can accomplish this through continued training and additional resources for early education providers to plan and create inclusive classrooms. Texas can also accomplish this goal by adding children who have an individual education plan (IEP) to the eligibility criteria for full-day, public pre-k. This is one of the challenges and solutions discussed in our new blog post on supporting young children with disabilities. Visit https://bit.ly/3V7cxUZ and check it out.
