For cancer patients here in the US on visas to receive medical treatment, their focus should be on their health—not navigating the complexities of immigration paperwork. Last week, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP partnered with NYLAG’s Legal Health Unit to host a clinic addressing just that, and we are grateful to everyone involved for working to extend patients’ visas so they can continue receiving treatment here in New York. #immigrationlaw #legalservices #outreach

“Hospitals are a place for care and healing, not coercion and threat.” Yesterday, the city of Philadelphia became the first to pass a bill that will ban medical deportations, making this a landmark law that hopefully will continue to spread across the U.S. For those of you who may not know, medical deportations pose a significant threat to immigrants living across the United States. This practice involves the removal of uninsured immigrant patients from U.S. hospitals without the patient's or their family's consent, jeopardizing their well-being. Sadly, this issue occurs more frequently than it is reported, leaving patients in vulnerable situations with uncertain futures. Our healthcare system, intricate and often isolating, poses challenges for many communities, particularly immigrants. Under current law, when an uninsured patient goes to the ER, hospitals are only required to stabilize them without ensuring long-term or chronic care, even when needed. Due to the reluctance of long-term care facilities to admit uninsured patients, hospitals, in turn, resort to deportation to avoid the financial burden of continued care. I express my heartfelt joy in commending the city of Philadelphia for passing legislation that not only safeguards thousands of lives but also represents a crucial step in addressing the systemic issues within our healthcare system. This achievement is a testament to the tireless efforts of advocacy organizations and groups that fearlessly worked towards this significant feat. With immense gratitude and admiration I congratulate Adrianna Torres-García and the Free Migration Project for their huge efforts towards this win. May we continue to use our voices to further the support for immigrant justice and health equity. Medi-Cal News! 🚀 California's new laws are reshaping full-scope Medi-Cal eligibility, regardless of immigration status. In May 2022, California introduced the Older Adult Expansion law, ensuring full-scope Medi-Cal for those 50 and above, no matter immigration status. Other Medi-Cal eligibility rules remain unchanged. Simultaneously, the young adult expansion program caters to individuals under 25, adhering to consistent rules. Hey LinkedIn fam! 👋💖 Let's talk about the recent changes in Florida's Medicaid spending on emergency care for undocumented immigrants. 🩺💸 Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a law requiring hospitals to ask about patients' immigration status, and it's had a MAJOR impact. 😮 Medicaid spending on emergency care for undocumented immigrants has dropped by a whopping 54%! 📉 While some see this as a win for DeSantis and Florida Republicans who are all about tackling illegal immigration, others are worried about the long-term effects. 😕 Will this law scare migrants away from seeking essential medical care, especially pregnant women in labor? 🤰 This debate is part of a bigger conversation about balancing immigration policies with compassionate healthcare. 🤝 It's a complex issue that affects not just Florida but the entire healthcare industry. 🏥 As healthcare professionals, it's crucial for us to stay informed about these changes and their potential impact on patient care. 🩺📚 We need to find ways to ensure everyone has access to necessary medical services while also navigating the evolving legal landscape. 🗺️ I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! How do you think we can strike a balance between immigration policies and accessible healthcare? 💭 Drop a comment below and let's start a meaningful discussion. 🙌 #healthcare #immigration #medicaid #florida #patientcare #accesstocare

FEELING SICK? DON'T GO TO A TEXAS HOSPITAL . . . . . . unless you can undisputedly prove that you are an American citizen. Under an executive order from Governor Greg Abbott, Texas hospitals are required to collect immigration status information from those seeking medical services. My question is this: Is the enforcement of the order focused on asking nonwhite medical services users to prove citizenship or will every white person also be required to document citizenship? A second question is this: How does one prove citizenship? With a birth certificate? A passport? We all know that a driver's license doesn't prove citizenship and how many of us carry a passport or birth certificate with us when we travel to another state. Will Texas accept my passport card (https://lnkd.in/er2QhjXJ) as proof of citizenship or is the word of the US government insufficient? https://lnkd.in/eX6t7-HG
