New York is transitioning to electric buses for its public transportation and school buses to reduce emissions and improve health. Public transportation The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has purchased 265 new electric buses, in addition to 60 purchased in 2024 and 205 more to arrive in 2025. The new buses will operate on routes across New York City's five boroughs. The MTA's zero-emission bus fleet will help the city avoid 500,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. School buses New York State plans to convert its entire school bus fleet to electric school buses (ESBs) by 2035. ESBs are powered by rechargeable batteries that run off New York's clean energy grid. The state has provided funding to school districts and fleet operators to help with the transition. Benefits Electric buses reduce emissions that contribute to climate change and harm children's health. Electric buses can have lower maintenance costs than traditional buses.
