The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are making significant strides toward sustainable logistics with a $25 million investment in electric drayage truck charging infrastructure. In collaboration with regional air quality agencies, they will install 207 charging units across eight Southern California sites, part of a broader $135 million initiative. The Clean Truck Fund is accelerating the deployment of zero-emission trucks and infrastructure, with state vouchers up to $250,000 available for heavy-duty truck purchases. Additionally, the Port of Los Angeles has introduced battery-powered electric cargo top handlers, aiming for a zero-emissions transition by 2030 for all cargo handling equipment and by 2035 for drayage trucks. The Port of Long Beach has launched a new heavy-duty vehicle charging depot for Class 8 zero-emissions (ZE) trucks. Operated by 4 Gen Logistics LLC, the facility features 30 hyper-fast chargers with 350-kilowatt power output, supporting the rapid recharging of 4 Gen’s fleet of 79 battery-electric trucks. In mid-October, port officials and 4 Gen executives held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the opening of the Long Beach facility. The facility is the largest charging depot at any North American port to date, said Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero. “The infrastructure that supplies the clean energy zero-emissions trucks need to keep cargo moving has always been as much of a priority as the trucks themselves. We’re proud to work with companies like 4-Gen, WattEV and Forum Mobility to lead the way for greener trade and transportation operations at home and abroad.” 4 Gen partnered with Electrify America, the largest charging network in the U.S., to design, develop and build the facility located at 200 Pier S Ave. In addition to the Port of Long Beach, backers include the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Committee, the California Air Resources Board and the Port of Los Angeles. - World Cargo News #shippingnews #pfsglobal

💡 How do EU citizens feel about bigger and heavier trucks ? The survey of 8.037 respondents, conducted in 9 Member States (FR, DE, BE, AT, IT, PL, HU, ES and RO) revealed that most are unaware of the serious impact of introducing ‘gigaliners’ or ‘mega trucks’ on the road network. After receiving information on the characteristics of these vehicles, a majority considered the use of #megatrucks to be negative, expressing concerns on the impact on road infrastructure, congestion, road safety and noise. A vast majority also consider the promotion of road-rail #combinedtransport as preferable to reduce road congestion and ensure higher safety standards. Yet our Ministers of Transport are likely to allow cross-border circulation of mega trucks which may be introduced under the EU #WeightsAndDimensionsDirective. This will undermine the EU’s ambition to decarbonise the transport sector, work against the intention to promote electrification of road transport and at the same time lead to a #modalshift from rail to road, which contradicts the EU’s proclaimed #GreenDeal goals.
