DHSES staff recently toured the towns of Arietta and Wells by following the path of a tornado that felled thousands of trees. We provided drone support to help assess the damages and determine the strength and size of the storm working closely with Hamilton County Emergency Services, the Sheriff’s Department, NYSDOT and NWS.

..."This is our fifth loss in the last month." Unacceptable & terrible loss of life. We can - and must - do better. Wildfires literally burn 3% of the US's GDP every year - larger than the entire DoD budget (and growing every year) We have to switch from reacting to fires - to proactively staying ahead of the fires. To put it in financial terms - if we spend 10% of the current cost that *we are already paying* (.3% of the GDP) we can save 1.5% of the US's GDP - if not more. ...and it's not a US problem- the world is on fire.

We’ve had another heartbreaking tragic accident in our firefighting family. This is our fifth loss in the last month. Our thoughts and prayers are with the pilot’s family, friends and firefighting community. With so many wildfires on the landscape and with resources already stretched thin across North America, we are asking everyone to please be careful — and be one less spark out there. We have thousands of firefighters in the air and on the ground, fighting to protect communities across North America during this historic fire season, please keep them in your prayers. We have a long way to go before late October rains.

Your property’s roof is its first line of defense against the elements, especially during storms. In this season of heavy rains to strong winds and hail, storms can wreak havoc on your roof if it’s not properly prepared. https://ow.ly/gJWQ50Sb7NW #Aspencontracting #roofprotection #freeinspections

If you saw my post on the NM fires, we immediately moved into supporting the flooding disaster in IA, MN, and SD. This time it was a larger team effort between the United States Air Force Civil Air Patrol Geospatial team and our airborne teams while helping FEMA. We used imagery from Maxar Technologies, open-source, and local sheriff drone imagery. Thanks again to Esri for the ArcGIS Online environment we used to make the assessments. From tornadoes, then fires, and now floods, our team is making a difference helping our fellow Americans! Civil Air Patrol members from several wings took to the skies in a massive relief effort to support authorities in several Midwestern states, where rising floodwaters covered all but the roofs of homes, drowned farmlands, and damaged hundreds of businesses in portions of Iowa, South Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. Read more about our response at https://bit.ly/45RmfPp. 📷: The map illustrates how GPS coordinates embedded in photos can be pulled into map software. The map shows the region of the Big Sioux south of Sioux Falls and north of Sioux City.

'Every so often, in the midst of chaos, you come across an amazing, inexplicable instance of civic responsibility. Maybe the last shred of faith people have is in their firemen.'- Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus Multiple people were rescued from a deadly high-rise fire in Harlem today. The FDNY used rope rescues to extract at least 3 people from the burning structure today, when the entire department generally performs rope rescues 3-4 times in an entire year. The firefighters were guided to the victims by NYPD helicopters using FLIR to see through the smoke. This is that low-frequency, ultra-high-risk event that high-reliability organizations train and plan for....relentlessly. Today, despite the tragic death of one victim who couldn't be rescued, this is pretty much a success. A success only made possible by the relentless pursuit of excellence, the uncompromising application of the highest possible fucking standards. Nothing less will do. Period. Or else people fucking die. #FDNY #NYPD #highangle #roperescue #abseiling #rappelling #Manhattan #Harlem #NewYork #firefighter #thinredline #StFlorian #highreliability #relentlesspursuitofexcellence https://lnkd.in/gjY5PVyu

Every day on UK roads, five people are killed, and around 80 are seriously injured. On the Road Intelligence platform, we found a roundabout on Wilstead Bypass with 41 near-miss incidents occurring in the last three months. This is because: 🛑Vehicles are driving over 40km/h when approaching or on the roundabout; 🚗Combine this with the steering action required to enter and exit the roundabout; 🚨Creates g-forces of over 0.4g, above safe thresholds. Connected Vehicle data can be helpful in mapping where non-fatal crashes occur to encourage early intervention and prevent more severe crashes in future. This month, we're supporting National Road Victim Month and will share more near-miss cases like this one. RoadPeace #RoadVictimMonth #VictimsVoice
