"AI in ICNS: Beyond the Hype" Workshop at the Integrated Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance (ICNS) Conference, Dulles, VA. April 24, 2024. Panel members: - Dr. Missy Cummings (Director Mason Responsible AI program) - Dr. Antonio Correas (co-founder/CPO, Skymantics) - Mr. Amit Ganjoo (Founder/CEO, ANRA Technologies) - Dr. Fred Wieland (Chief Research Scientist, Mosaic ATM) Co-Workshop Chairs: Adrian Solomon, CSEP, & Lance Sherry Discussed the challenges of deploying AI applications in the design, operations, and post-operations analysis phases. Some takeaways: - Don't forget about the cost of maintaining the AI system once it is deployed. AI systems need constant care and feeding. - Keep testing the AI system even when it is deployed. Hopefully, you can catch the incidents/accidents in the testing before they occur in the real world. - Writing testable requirements for the AI system should be a requirement. AI systems need to be scoped and have performance metrics just like any other system. - Human operator intervention and monitoring should be explicitly designed, not just an afterthought. - Physics-based machine learning algorithms have the advantage of ensuring the machine learning does not violate fundamental laws of physics (e.g. conservation of mass, conservation of energy). #ICNS #ICNS2024 #AI #autonomoussystems #airworthiness #certification #FAA #EASA
