Hello, organic food lovers!🌱 Imagine you're a farmer who's just started an organic food business. You grow four different types of organic products: Apples, Oranges, Carrots, and Tomatoes. 🍎🍊🥕🍅 Your task is to figure out the order of these products based on the revenue they generate. Here are some clues to help you: 1️⃣ The product that generates the most revenue isn't grown above ground or below ground, but on a tree. 🌳 2️⃣ The product that generates the least revenue is not the one that is orange. 🚫🍊 3️⃣ The product that generates the second highest revenue is grown below ground. 🌱 4️⃣ The product that is red doesn't generate the most or the least revenue. 🔴 Hint: Start by identifying which product grows on a tree and which one is grown below ground. Then, consider the color and revenue of each product. 🌱 Exciting Insights from IDM's Focus Day on Fine Food and Organics in Germany! 🍲 "Feinkost-, Spezialitäten- und Biovertrieb in Deutschland" took center stage at IDM's recent focus day, featuring presentations by market experts and engaging one-on-one meetings for South Tyrolean entrepreneurs. In 2022 for the first year since long time germans spent less on organic food than in the year before. The long-term perspective reveals that germans allocate a relatively low share of their income to food. 📉💡 The chance for delicacies, fine food and organic food is that the food cost in general are rising. And thereby the gap between price entry products and fine food decreases. What we see is that in specialized stores or onlineshops, where people or algorythms work as consultant for the consumer, the sales of fine food and organic food isn't decreasing. As people perceive much better the value added. Natural food co-ops, traditionally associated with organic and fair-trade products, are increasingly focusing on affordability due to changing consumer values and economic pressures. This shift has led to elevated sales as co-ops introduce cheaper organic options like United Natural Foods Inc.’s Field Day brand and even some conventional, less healthy items. The move reflects a departure from the co-ops' original values of the 1970s. Co-ops like the Mississippi Market in St. Paul are adding more affordable options, including national brands and discount private labels, to cater to diverse customer needs. Initiatives like the Co+op Basics program have given co-ops better buying power, helping them compete with mainstream stores offering their own organic brands. This strategy has led to a rise in co-op sales, with significant growth in cheaper organic goods. While co-ops strive to balance maintaining their values with offering affordable products, bulk buying and loyalty programs also help customers save money. Despite higher prices, many consumers value the support for local producers and fair wages for workers that co-ops represent.

Does this difference feel expensive? Or is it less than you would expect? Today I want to share this excerpt from our blog post 'How to buy organic on a budget' written by our trainee Fieke: “When I’m grocery shopping I can’t help but compare prices of organic and non-organic products that are sitting side by side. But a price difference of say, 20 cents, for a bag of carrots still feels abstract to me. Sometimes it can help to understand what those 20 cents extra mean for a month of grocery shopping. So here is what I did: I took the products that are available at all the four supermarkets and estimated how much I would buy of these per month. So for example, two bags of carrots. Then I looked at the price difference. How much would it cost to buy the monthly mount for all these products, and how much extra would it be to buy them organically? Here are the results (averages of all supermarkets). The difference is roughly 25 euros, regardless of the supermarket. Some supermarket’s prices are just higher in general. And then I noticed something interesting: an average two-person household in the Netherlands currently spends about €500 a month on food. And research shows that the majority of people are willing to pay a 5% price difference for organic products. Which is exactly the price difference shown in the infographic (25€ extra on 500€ monthly groceries). So if your financial situation allows for it, what if this image serves a guide to buy all of these always organically? Personally, this list of groceries was more than I expected. Especially since I also included some of the relatively expensive organic products.” ----- 🙋♂️ I share facts about climate change and food.
