Street-level conditions must be documented before work begins underneath. For that reason, our Subway Construction Photograph Collection is filled with images of #NYC above ground. Aerial photographs are more rare, however. That’s why this #NYTMCollection photograph is our First Friday feature for July. The photograph shows an aerial view of Columbus Circle in 1957 with portions of the roadway dug up and construction going on below ground. It was taken as part of a series of survey images documenting the areas above stations that were receiving platform extensions. At this time, the 59th Street station on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line was undergoing a platform extension to accommodate longer trains. With the camera facing north, the photo captures automobile traffic on both Central Park West and Broadway going uptown, as well as a view of many of the buildings lining both streets. The entrance to Central Park is visible as well as the park itself. Buildings on #Manhattan's East Side and #CentralPark North can be seen in the distance on the top right. The image notes indicate that the photograph was taken from the roof of 2 Columbus Circle. Though plans for the building that currently houses the Museum of Arts and Design were in the works, at this time, 2 Columbus Circle was likely still the former Boulevard Hotel building. It was home to a shoe store, office space, and a large advertising billboard on the roof. Presumably, the photographer was standing in front of — or on top of — the billboard. Directly across the way is a B&O Railroad motor coach station and a large Coca Cola advertisement with the words “Thirst Knows No Season.” The photograph was taken in August, however, so it would have been the season if there ever was one. Digitization of this and 9,000+ other images was made possible by a Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. View more on our website at https://lnkd.in/ePHrb8cy.

Custom mapping is one of the most complex tasks, especially when done under constrains. Recently, that focus was directed towards creating the topographic map of USA (Contagious USA; there is also the continental USA). With one of the greatest Cartographic Societies, North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS), an extensive landmass, and being home to some of the best cartographers (John Nelson, Tom Patterson, Kenneth Field, Evan Applegate, Sarah Bell, Joseph Kerski Phd GISP, Craig Asquith, Heather Smith - from neighboring Canada...), we had to tread cautiously. The output also, had to precisely fit within a 100cm by 120cm canvas, which presented a practical challenge. After taking consideration on the coordinate system to utilize, the cartographic principle of omission took precedence, ensuring that key features were not denied the prime time moment! This was a positive challenge. For the distinctive basemap, boundaries, and state labels, We utilized Esri's National Geographic Style Base Layer and emulated their color scheme for custom boundaries and state labels. This is what led to this final output, which also includes a tad history on the evolution of the USA. Having been approved by the client, the printed and stretched map wall art will soon be arriving at its new home in a few days time. This is in a mission of promoting the adoption of cartography for home and office decor. “Architects live in their renderings” — according to photographer Lara Swimmer. I attended her excellent presentation last night of photos from her new book Reading Room: New and Reimagined Libraries of the American West. She was talking through the process of walking a completed library with an architect for a photo shoot. And what the architect does is look for that vantage point from the rendering, in hopes of achieving that rendering vs reality victory. Lara made the point that architects spend a long time holding on to the rendering as the “reality” of the building until it is finished, at which point the building in the real replaces the rendering. How true is that statement, that architects live in their renderings? If it is true, can we live more richly in that rendered space. Add sound to the rendering, wind, weather. Add a time of day effect, and seasons. Show a 24 hour “site camera” with virtual people milling about, using the building as we imagined and perhaps in ways we did not imagine (using machine learning to create NPCs that could test out things like building circulation).

Be a Bird of Prey! You got to gain altitude to see it more clearly... And so here we are! A bird's eye view refers to a perspective or viewpoint from above, and provides a broad and comprehensive outlook of a scene or situation Creating scope for a better understanding of the overall layout or context. This perspective is often used in various fields such as urban planning, architecture, and photography to gain a holistic understanding of a subject. In planning, it refers to a top-down perspective that allows planners to see the entire area or project they are working on. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the spatial layout, including the complexities and relationships between different elements and how they interact with each other. It helps planners to identify potential challenges, assess the impact of their decisions, and make informed choices about the design and development of the area (Fishbone structure). This perspective helps in creating more effective and efficient plans that consider the overall context and long-term goals. In architecture, this view refers to a top-down perspective of a building or its architectural design with an overview of the entire structure, allowing architects and designers to visualize the layout, proportions, and relationships between different elements, layers, structures, landscaping and designing requirements. With this view when used as a tool, architects can assess the overall composition, spatial organization, and circulation patterns within the building or a complete project. It does help in understanding how the various components of a certain design fit together and how they interact with the surrounding environment thus aiding in making informed decisions about the form, function, and aesthetics of the building or construction projects. In Photography, a bird's eye view refers to a perspective where the camera is positioned high above the subject, simulating a unique and often dramatic angle, that of a bird flying overhead, allowing photographers to capture scenes from an elevated position. It can be used to showcase landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, or even capture interesting patterns and shapes from above. It offers a fresh and different perspective, giving viewers a new way to experience and appreciate the subject matter. This technique can add depth, context, and visual interest to photographs, creating captivating and visually striking images. #writerslife #tck #perspectivematters #birdseyeview #birdsofprey

EDITS + PAIRINGS Yesterday, I posted an experimental Edit + Pairing that Bobbi Wendt put together for our discussion of a future shoot list. That pairing definitely won’t make it to my website or marketing materials, but those sorts of surprises are all part of our process of working together and we both had a bit of fun and wanted to share. The next 9 posts are definitely ready for prime time and they collectively showcase a few of Bobbi’s Edit + Pairing Super Powers. It should be noted that only 1 of the 9 posts were photographed in the same session. The rest are mixed singles that just happen to look incredible together. Some images were photographed this year, while others were selected by Bobbi during my Archive Edit. As 2023 is coming to a close and we’re winding down production, we decided to revisit a few of our favorite posted pairings, along with a couple new ones. Note that we’re planning to keep our post text pretty spare right up to Christmas Eve, as we’re both working on finalizing projects and prepping for 2024. I hope you enjoy viewing these pairs as much as Bobbi enjoyed making them. #RightsReserved_RoryEarnshaw #RoryEarnshaw #RoryEarnshawPhotography #SFbayAreaPhotographer #LocationPhotography #PortraitPhotography #Portrait #BandWportrait #BandWphoto #ArchitecturalPhotography #Architecture #Architect #FrankGehry #Editing #Pairing #CreativeCollaboration #LightingDesign #SanFranciscoBayArea #LosAngeles #L.A. #VisitCalifornia #WestCoast #WaltDisneyCenter #PerformingArtsCenter #PublicSpace #MixedSingles #2023 #Retrospective #2023Retrospective

Buildings are complex endeavors that must balance many priorities, but ultimately their biggest responsibility is providing safe and healthy spaces for occupants. There is a growing movement toward purposeful design of healthy buildings, whether that's for schools, offices, health care or anyplace people gather. I wrote about this trend, and how precast/prestressed concrete can contribute to healthy building design, in the latest issue of Ascent from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. Check it out! #PrecastProtectsLife #HealthyBuildings #sustainability #indoorairquality #acoustics #precastconcrete https://lnkd.in/ggDRMhBP

Experienced 3D artist with a strong background in landscape architecture. Passionate about blending creativity and technical skills to bring virtual environments to life.
Integrating plant life into architectural illustrations can greatly enhance their visual appeal. However, it is important to strike a balance and avoid potential pitfalls that may compromise the overall impression. Excessive use of flowering plants, repetitive placement of the same model, or insufficient foreground detail can detract from the desired effect. To achieve the perfect balance, it is a good idea not to strive for absolute perfection. Instead, consider incorporating a few models of the same species, varying their size and rotation for a more natural and dynamic composition. This approach ensures a visually captivating representation while maintaining a sense of authenticity and diversity. #landscapedesign #gardendesign #architecturalillustration #archviz
