America’s climate crisis and housing crisis are intertwined. The federal government has committed resources to tackling these crises through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). How can communities access these funds and maximize the money’s impact locally? The NYU Furman Center’s Housing Solution Lab and the Climate and Community Project will host a free webinar July 30 at 2 p.m. ET on how communities can use the IRA to advance climate and housing goals. Joining the Lab will be Ruthy Gourevitch, Housing Policy Manager at the Climate and Community Project think tank and Sarah Ralich, Senior Energy and Construction Manager at innovative nonprofit developer ACTION-Housing, Inc. Those of us in housing often acknowledge there is a limited role the federal government can play. But we shouldn't overlook the role that the federal government CAN play. Bruce Katz identifies meaningful ways the feds can help address the housing crisis. "The federal government is the largest allocator of capital and the largest landowner in our economy. There is no shortage of capital available to address crises, as recently demonstrated by the nearly $800 million the Inflation Reduction Act dedicated to combating climate change and the innovation and deployment of clean energy technologies." https://lnkd.in/e7r6mGHD

The Climate-Resilient Housing Initiative, powered by Build Change, is at the forefront of global efforts to embed resilience into the housing sector. We engage decision-makers and homeowners across the housing value chain and bring together governments, financial institutions, philanthropists, and innovators to ensure that climate-resilient housing is accessible to all. Our goal? To make 10 million people more resilient by 2030. We’re advancing solutions that fortify both new and existing homes, making them disaster-ready while reducing their carbon footprint and transforming the sector. There is a great deal of focus on housing right now in local government circles, related to delivery, viability, affordability and net zero transition. It was a real privilege recently to chair a District Councils' Network roundtable to explore the challenges, opportunities, policy priorities, academic research and practical insight. Locally, great to see a positive annual report from our North Kesteven District Council housing company Lafford Homes - established in 2016, the company has close to 150 homes in its portfolio, with significant opportunities to expand its development pipeline. It generates substantial social, environmental and financial returns, above business plan profile, whilst building to a local net zero compliant standard. Check out Lafford Homes here: https://lnkd.in/dii_ASm In relation to housing delivery, our award winning Central Lincolnshire Local Plan developed in partnership with Lincoln and West Lindsey creates momentum for delivery of significant urban extensions across our area, within an ambitious policy framework for transition to net zero aligned to our climate action aspirations. Check out more on the Local Plan here: https://lnkd.in/eY2xTFGx. The debate will continue about the policy framework required nationally for accelerating delivery and meeting local need. Much of that debate needs to focus on the economics of land and development, the need for substantial public investment in social housing, place and infrastructure, momentum for net zero transition (now), and the application of value created by the public to deliver public good. But that’s for another day! #lincolnshire #localgovernment #housing #climateaction #sdgs2030

The climate crisis and the housing affordability crisis are happening at the same time. This multiplies the threats and dangers, but it also gives communities the chance to address both major problems at once. Check out my blog for a recap of current programs available through the Inflation Reduction Act for local governments and builders to invest in affordable, efficient, and resilient housing:

See my first Evergreen policy memo about how we can and must address the housing and climate crises together. "America is in a housing crisis. The world is in a climate crisis. With the right policies, we can solve them both together and save money for American families. The next four years represent an amazing opportunity to simultaneously address the crises of housing, energy affordability, and the climate crisis. Now is the time to enact a bold agenda that works to lower costs for American families and reduce both toxic and climate-destabilizing pollution from our buildings. We must: Make housing abundant where it’s needed most by reforming zoning and other policies that are limiting our housing supply near jobs and transit. Make housing affordable for all by supporting public, social, and other affordable housing for people across the economic spectrum. Make housing healthy, clean, and efficient by requiring all homes built with federal support be up to the highest standards for health, safety, and energy efficiency. Ensure equity by protecting existing residents and communities and providing support for people of all income levels. Making housing abundant, affordable, healthy, and climate-smart should be a priority for federal, state, and local governments."

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) and cooperative housing are making a big difference for low-income communities in the U.S. They help people stay in their homes and deal with climate change. What Are CLTs? - CLTs are nonprofit groups that own land for the community. - They keep land affordable by controlling the resale price of homes. - They protect residents from high costs by adding energy-efficient upgrades and renewable energy. - They also help build strong community ties among residents. What Is Cooperative Housing? - In cooperative housing, residents own and manage their homes together. - This model helps people keep their homes affordable and stable even if the neighborhood changes. Why It Matters: By mixing affordable housing with sustainability and community support, CLTs and cooperative housing help low-income communities stay strong against rising costs and climate change. At the intersection of housing justice and climate justice, we have an opportunity to not only tackle a major source of carbon pollution but to ensure more Americans have access to affordable homes. Housing justice and climate justice can go hand in hand, and I’m so thrilled we have Tony Sirna on our team at Evergreen Action making sure they do. Check out his first Evergreen piece, below, on this issue!

Latest brief from Just Solutions analyzes two IRA and IIJA programs that provide targeted investments in housing, the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP) and Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). The analysis concludes that the two programs alone are still not sufficient for meeting the needs of housing and climate justice. Read the brief on our website for recommendations on ways to improve GRRP and WAP by enhancing partnerships and inclusive outreach, centering tenants in the process, and tailoring technical assistance. This month we'll be sharing even more content on housing and climate so follow us for more! https://bit.ly/4fIKunt Authored by Zully Juarez, MURP. and Idalmis Vaquero. #HousingJustice #HousingEquity #Housing #IRA #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateJustice #JustTransition

🌍 Housing is more than just a basic need—it's a global crisis. 🏘️ Did you know that 1.6 billion people are currently living in substandard housing? It’s an issue that crosses borders, affecting both developed and developing nations. 🔍 Key challenges: Rising housing costs Homelessness in urban centers Limited access to affordable housing But here’s where it gets more complex... 🧩 Even as we build more homes, inequality grows. Many of the new developments cater to high-income buyers, leaving middle and low-income families behind. 🚧 So what’s the solution? 🔑 Innovative housing policies: Government interventions for affordable housing projects Sustainable development that balances affordability and environmental responsibility Encouraging private sector partnerships for more inclusive urban planning This isn’t just a government problem. Businesses, communities, and individuals can all play a role in tackling this massive issue. ♻️ If this resonates with you, consider sharing to spread awareness.
