Video is a great way to grab attention and maintain the attention of your audience. Data shows videos are 5x more engaging and the information is digested 6x easier then static alternatives. Telling a short story with a video is an excellent example of how impactful video can be.

Scholars can learn a lot from documentary filmmakers. Although it may sound unusual, filmmakers often need to conduct the same type of fieldwork as scholars, and usually do it even better. Filmmakers can take on the roles of historians, sociologists, psychologists, and anthropologists. This is why I, Nataliya Borys, believe we can gain valuable insight from filmmakers, especially those who work in conflict and war zones. I invited Alina Gorlova to share her experience with us, scholars in this article "Documenting people in conflict and war zones. Another fascinating aspect that deserves cinematic exploration is the tradition of giving a surname (marga) to non-Batak Toba individuals who marry into Batak Toba families. In Batak Toba culture, surnames are deeply rooted in ancestry and community. When a non-Batak marries a Batak person, they often receive a Batak surname to signify their inclusion in the family’s clan. This process, while an honour, can also present cultural challenges, especially in mixed marriages. Imagine the rich storytelling potential of portraying a non-Batak individual navigating the complexities of their new identity within the Batak community. Such stories would resonate with both Batak and non-Batak audiences, offering fresh perspectives on cultural integration and family dynamics. https://lnkd.in/ggsUuBgS
