Did you know that milk production in Kakamega county increased by 50.9 million in five years? Now that you know, here is what was done to make the county in which most residents depended on sugarcane and maize production achieved this laudable transformation. In the financial year 20/2016, former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya initiated a dairy farming upgrade programme to help farmers contribute positively to food security through milk production. The county, noting unexploited potential in milk production, established that majority of dairy animals owned by most farmers were low and average milk producers. This revelation pushed the county to subsidise Artificial Insemination cost, train more Artificial Inseminators and sourced for pedigree heifers. The three-pronged approach was to ensure Kakamega farmers could afford inseminating their dairy cattle with improved breeds with high-milk producing genes, access artificial inseminators in their localities and have high milk producing animals. continued in the comments...

Our journey to Net Zero by 2030 has been a transformative experience at the farm. Over the past two years, restructuring our main dairy has proven to be both challenging and rewarding. Celebrating our progress in the university farming enterprises, we proudly achieved a new record of 41.6 litres on average per cow per day in May. By setting high standards and focusing on enhancing our herd and infrastructure, we have embraced technologies like Cow Manager, Uniform-Agri, and Smart Bell. Our commitment to genetic progress remains steadfast, with our herd now reaching £207 PLI at 59% reliability. Operating with a high-performing herd on a 65% homegrown forage ration, we have also incorporated some homegrown cereals into a portion of the remaining TMR ration. Proximar’s first harvest commands 10% higher prices than imported salmon : Proximar Seafood, a Norwegian land-based salmon farming company operating in Japan, has reported its third-quarter results, highlighting a mix of successes and operational challenges.
