To share expertise, share knowledge, and create new services.' - Panel Discussion insight: Not adopting AI today could mean no business in 5 years. - Key Theme: AI won't take your job, but the guy who uses AI will. - New tech ideas presented for a venture capital jury, focusing on carbon footprint, energy analysis, and drone products for energy savings through automated building exterior diagnostics and more... The following day, I was part of a morning panel discussing how technology is shaping design, construction, and operation processes. Main takeaway: Change starts from the top. Last night at the AxEC community panel, one of the questions came up was the impact of #GenAI on society as a general purpose technology (GPT). A different kind of GPT, yes :-) What is a general purpose technology? Electricity and Information Technology are two examples of general-purpose technology that have broad impact across industries and sectors, fundamentally transforming our production processes and everyday lives. Is #GenAI a general purpose technology? It is still up for debate. Options pro this position are typically optimistic -- "#GenAI is one of the most important technology for mankind". Opinions against it are a lot more conservative -- "#GenAI is cute, it is good for writing essays and generate images, but we have not seen any transformational economic impact yet. " Let's go back to #electricity for a moment. Edison filed his patent in 1880, it is not until 1936's Rural Electrification Act that the greater society began to benefit from electricity as a general technology. Similarly for Information Technology, digitalization of physical documents (e.g., spreadsheets), as the first step, brought little productivity gain. It was not until the Internet and email came to wide use, Information Technology transformations enabled foundational productivity gains. Another interesting parallel. Electricity, as a direct replacement of Steam Engine, brought roughly 10% of cost reduction for factories in the early 1900s. At that time, many questioned the transformational value of electricity, just like we question #GenAI today. But then people figured out that Electricity allowed the decoupling of machinery from the source of energy, which led to modular production and the birth of the assembly line (in 1913). And that led to Electricity's true general purpose impact. [Professor Avi Goldfarb's research] We are in the early 1900s with #GenAI. We don't quite know what new processes and foundational new production models that it will enable. But it is an exciting time to be an #innovator, #thinker, #doer, and #investor.
