Cooley as a firm always does very well in these lawyer ranking lists. This year, Cooley's Corporate/M&A practice moved onto the national "Elite" list—not too shabby. I am proud to have been part of that effort. As a personal aside (which is going to show my age...but so be it): From what I can tell (but don't hold me to this), Chambers published its first list of lawyers in the Corporate/M&A area for San Francisco and Silicon Valley in 2003. I thought it was a very good, representative list back then, reflecting the actual reality of the practice and the market. I think the same about the 2024 local list. But here is the kicker: Of the lawyers on that inaugural 2003 list, there are a total of eight Bay Area lawyers who have been included on each of the 22 intervening lists, including the 2024 rankings (Ken King, Rick Climan, Larry Sonsini, Gordy Davidson, Marty Korman, Steve Camahort, Keith Flaum and myself). That is not a bad list to be on. The more I think about it, the crazier it seems.

Super Lawyers selects attorneys using a rigorous, patented multiphase selection process. Candidates are nominated by their peers as self-nomination is prohibited and evaluations are combined with independent research. Each candidate is evaluated on a patended process of 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process for the Rising Stars list is the same as the Super Lawyers selection process, with one exception: to be eligible for inclusion in Rising Stars, a candidate must be either 40 years old or younger or in practice for 10 years or less. While up to five percent of the lawyers in the state are named to Super Lawyers, no more than 2.5 percent are named to the Rising Stars list.
