In collaboration with some passionate, forward thinking clients, we’re addressing questions of cultural regeneration. With flexibility in the brief, we’re allowed to consider the project as an instigator for socio-economic change. What are the consequences of various use classes in our town centres? These towns are often depleted of a vibrancy in their historic centres after supermarkets and shopping malls offered a certain convenience. Regeneration then, becomes a question of value. What value do we afford to an identifiable civic centre, where life is encouraged to play out? As our networks evolve and the distances between these islands become more easily traversable, the island gains importance; and with it, the use with which it is programmed.

How To Design Cities Like Villages. (A short weekend read) It’s not uncommon for 'city dwelling' neighbors to know little about each other. This urban isolation is a far cry from the communal closeness of traditional villages, and it highlights a need to rethink how our cities are designed. Villages, on the other hand, are designed by the people who live in them, fostering high levels of participation and public health. This active engagement creates a powerful sense of agency, something PetitHaus aims to restore for young Nigerians through our affordable co-ownership model. The village is built by the villagers, who create spaces the way they want & how they desire to live in, where their voices are heard, and their needs are met. So how do we apply the ideals of 'village life' to modern city planning to achieve sustainability? We explore 3 actionable strategies: - Creating shared spaces & footpaths for better connection - Enabling shared resources, and - Reconnecting to nature. How will these lead to achieving sustainable and inclusive city development? Continue reading here: https://lnkd.in/ey2Zz89V
