Some individuals turn to substance abuse as a way to avoid confronting past trauma. By removing these substances, it can bring up buried memories of the trauma that we may have forgotten but still reside within our brains. Escaping from our problems may provide temporary relief, but it only leads to a never-ending chase. Whether it’s turning to substances, distractions, or unhealthy behaviors, these temporary fixes only serve to mask the deeper issues we’re avoiding. The truth is, until we confront the root cause of our problems head-on, we’ll continue to find ourselves trapped in this cycle of escapism. By addressing the underlying issues causing us distress, we can alleviate the need to escape altogether. This doesn’t mean it will be easy or comfortable, but it’s the only way to achieve true freedom and lasting change.
