June marks #Alzheimers and Brain Awareness Month. While there is no definitive cure for cognitive decline, there are ways to help preserve and stimulate #BrainHealth. Providers can help their patients by encouraging them to seek new forms of sensory input, such as puzzles or social connection. Cognitive stimulation is one of many reasons we provide socializing opportunities for our patients inside our community rooms. Read more about on how to improve brain health: https://bit.ly/3XyfijN

The fluctuations in dementia are often worsened by constipation, largely because of the "gut-brain connection". This principle is simple and applies to all individuals. The gut feeds the brain and the brain feeds the gut. This symbiotic relationship demonstrates the interlinking in the body. The bowels absorb glucose, but do not use it for energy. The brain primarily uses glucose as energy, and in the process of its metabolism, it creates glutamine (amino acid). The gut then uses glutamine as its primary source of energy. Thus the "gut-brain connection". Constipation interferes with this important pathway and worsens the symptoms of dementia. Eat a lot of fibre and plenty of fruit, drink adequate water and aim to have a normal bowel action every day. #dementia #alzheimers #endalz #research #brainhealth
