The latest issue of Local Development & Society focuses on an incredibly important topic for institutional philanthropy - place-based grantmaking. There is far too little research guidance on this form of philanthropic practice, but the articles in this issue help fill this void.

As we near the conclusion of this remarkable month, while paying tribute to #HispanicHeritageMonth, I wish to extend my recognition and continuous celebration of our Hispanic entrepreneurs, visionaries, disruptors, and leaders. Their unwavering commitment to effecting positive change and leaving a lasting impact on our communities and daily lives is truly commendable. Our Hispanic community plays a pivotal and indispensable role in the U.S. economy, yet we also remain steadfast in our commitment to our roots and supporting our heritage. “According to the Joint Economic Committee Hispanic Entrepreneurship and Business Brief: Nearly one in four new businesses is Hispanic-owned. The nearly 5 million Hispanic-owned businesses in the United States contribute more than $800 billion to the American economy annually.” ✔️There are over 375,000 Hispanic-owned, employer businesses located across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These enterprises employ at least one employee other than the owner. ✔️Hispanic employer businesses employ about 1 million workers, with more than $100 billion in annual payroll. The number of Hispanic-owned businesses that employ at least one employee other than the owner increased by 14% between 2012 and 2017 — more than twice as fast as the national average. ✔️In the decade preceding the pandemic, the number of Hispanic business owners increased 34% compared to an increase of just 1% among non-Hispanic business owners. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY: 2. Ignoring the letter from The Kcmo Fairness Board Chairman & Fairness Committee regarding Civil Rights violations ? Harrasment of minority contractors ? inadequate reporting from Kcmo CREO department ? No Disparity report for 9 years and more ? 2016 Disparity Report below: Department of I think 1.2 minority [participation] and 2.5 WBE [participation], when there was adequate availability of minority and women contractors to meet the City’s standard kind of goal of 15 [percent] and 7 [percent]. They’re diluting the opportunity for minority and women contractors when it comes through the statutory business development organizations, all of whom have different sets of rules..… There ought to be a uniform code that is incorporated in all the development agreements which people in our community never see.… There’s a disconnect. And I realize they’re trying to change some of that now but the insulting part of it was there was more money spent through statutory agencies last year for contracting activities than there were through City departments.… It’s obviously developer driven. By the time we see it the development agreement has already been executed. Caused lack of capital for Jackson County schools and libraries. Mayor Lucas and Insult to African Americans everywhere?
