"Juneteenth is not just a holiday," shares Charniece D. Tisdale, our Senior Director of DEI. She explains that "at Oak Street Health, we celebrate Juneteenth by recognizing and honoring our colleagues, our patients and our communities through acts of service, community building and raising awareness." This year, our team members helped My Block, My Hood, My City beautify a neighborhood on the southwest side of Chicago.

I really didn't know what "Juneteenth" means, so I went and asked some people if they knew what "Juneteenth means and I got a lot of great answers. So for me, from the answers I received, it's about recognizing and honoring people who brought/ bring great achievements to us as a whole. Charniece D. Tisdale, Senior Director of DEI at Oak Street Health, gave a great example of recognizing and honoring people who teamed to beautify a neighborhood in Southwest side of Chicago as well as honoring colleagues, patients and communities who through acts of service, community building, and raising awareness. For those of us who are sports fans, I would like to honor and recognize those people of color who fought the great fight to integrate our national pastime and other sports leagues to make our games more interesting to watch and bring more sports heroes to our country. Those names are the great Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays (RIP), Satchel Paige, Jim Brown, Doug Williams, Juan Marichel, Reggie Jackson, Lew Alcindor aka Kareem Abdul Jabar, Tiger Woods, and the list goes on and on. These are some of the greatest sports people who fought to break the color barrier in our national sporting events to bring equality. There's a lot to honor!!
