As climate change impacts the world of sports, soccer clubs are stepping up by embracing smart stadiums, renewable energy, and sustainable fan behavior. We’re proud to support these efforts through GOAL (Green Operations & Advanced Leadership), helping sports and entertainment venues operate more sustainably by tracking their energy, water and waste consumption. 🌟⚽ After a crazy weekend of high-scoring games, celebrations, and heartbreaks in the German Bundesliga, we kick off the week with news that shows football is scoring big for the planet too: UK football’s Greener Game program! 🌱 Football has always been about more than just the game—it’s about community, connection, and creating a legacy. The English Football Association’s #GreenerGame initiative, in partnership with E.ON Next, is a brilliant step toward a sustainable future. Grassroots clubs across England are reducing costs and emissions with energy audits, solar panels, and heat pumps, in an effort to ensure that the heart of football—its community—is protected for generations to come 💚 But the game doesn’t stop here. The next goal for football must be to embrace nature-based solutions that go beyond energy efficiency to restore and protect biodiversity. By enhancing natural ecosystems, clubs can not only mitigate climate impacts but also enrich the environments where players and fans thrive. ⚽ How do you see your industry leading the way in sustainability and biodiversity? With COP29 underway, it was vital for the venue to align with the event’s focus on sustainability. Baku Stadium was upgraded with measures for waste reduction and sustainable sourcing.♻️🌿 For grassroots football clubs and their venues, there are valuable lessons to be drawn, and similar practices can be adopted to make venues and operations more sustainable. Here’s how: - Switch to renewables like solar or wind and install energy-efficient lighting to cut costs and emissions.💡 - Set up waste separation and composting systems to recycle effectively and reduce landfill waste.🗑️ - Use local food vendors for catering and upcycle equipment to support circular practices.⭕ - Choose suppliers who prioritise sustainable practices.🌲 - Educate players, staff, and fans on programmes sustainability campaigns.🧠 By adopting these sustainable practices, grassroots football clubs can not only reduce their environmental impact but also set an example for the next generation of players, fans, and leaders. Have you been less active due to the weather this year? I’ve definitely not been on the golf course as much 🤦🏻♂️ And new research by Sport England has highlighted the negative impact extreme weather is having 👇🏼 More and more grassroots sport is getting cancelled due to flooded pitches. With the FA estimating, 120,000 football games will be lost annually if the weather continues to disrupt play! So, it’s great to see a new environmental and sustainability package announced; with £45m to invest in restoring pitches and helping clubs embrace sustainability ♻️ Those who get involved with this initiative will need… ♻️ Sustainability plans in place by March 2027. ♻️ To reduce their carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. ♻️ And be net zero by 2040. Ambitious targets are necessary to drive change. And with sport holding so much influence on the nation, hopefully these proactive steps will encourage others to follow suit. If you’d like to take the first step by measuring your business' carbon footprint, get in touch now… 📩 #Sustainability #Collaboration #SportEngland

Sport England chair Chris Boardman: “sport must lead the way on climate change”. Speaking at the recent COP29 Azerbaijan (The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference) event, Boardman reiterated his call for sport and physical activity to be a key player in the worldwide fight against climate change. He said he wants the sector to lead the way because of its “immense reach through the local sports clubs that are embedded in every community”, as well as the “power of its star personalities to advocate on a global level”. “I hold this positive outlook because I can see the thousand small, practical changes we can make that, if enacted by every leader, person, community and sector, will see us prevail," he said.
