The Human Security Institute (THSI) and the Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) recently concluded a transformative 3-day training program designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of public servants in the realm of human rights. This comprehensive program covered critical areas such as constitutional, international, and national human rights frameworks, social interventions, policy programs, and effective responses to human rights violations. Participants found the training immensely valuable, equipping them with the necessary tools to promote and protect human rights more effectively in their daily work. The insights gained will undoubtedly contribute to a more robust and proactive human rights environment within public service. Together, we are building a stronger foundation for human rights in our country, ensuring that every individual’s dignity and rights are upheld. #HumanRights #PublicService #THSI #MoHR #TrainingProgram #Empowerment #SocialInterventions #PolicyPrograms

𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? If you have an interest or work in the field of business and human rights, you’ve probably encountered the terms Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA), Human Rights Risk Assessment (HRRA), and Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD). While these share some common ground, the differences between them are fundamental. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻: • They are all aimed at promoting respect for human rights in business practice • They are all founded on the UNGPs • They all involve the identification of human rights risks and mitigation measures. I've put together a quick overview to show how they differ in scope and application. #BusinessAndHumanRights #CorporateResponsibility #UNGPs #HRIA #HRRA #HRDD

Senior Journalist at Canadian HR Reporter | Neurodivergent creative | Forthcoming book about Neurodivergence in the Workplace
Research is showing that #womenintrades are experiencing what I'm calling "Thick skin syndrome" - as a former landscaper who worked on and led many mostly male crews, I've learned firsthand how as the lone woman you have to develop a thick skin to be able to handle the constant #microaggressions and just get through the day with a smile on your face. Also known as "being one of the guys". But it's perpetuating the fact that women still make up less than 5% of the workforce in trades in #Canada, missing out on all the opportunities and financial advancement that trades can offer. And #employers in trades are missing out on a valuable resource, as women prove again and again that they are determined and skilled workers - they only need to be given the space in trades to thrive, without needing to grow a "thick skin" to do so. In this article I speak with two experts in the industry: Seema Lal, partner at Singleton Urquhart Reynolds Vogel LLP and president of Canadian Construction Women (CCW), and Dr. Lisa Weatherby, Ed.D., Dean of academics at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), doctor of inclusivity in apprenticeship programs, and aircraft maintenance engineer. There are some great insights here about what needs to happen for Canada's trades industries to be truly welcoming to women and other under-represented minorities. #womensupportingwomen #womeninbusiness #humanresources #hr #management #skilledtrades #trades #canadatrades #employment #discrimination #genderparity #equality #gendergap #construction #womenrights #humanresourcesmanager #employmentlaw #employmentlawer Anita Wong Canadian HR Reporter

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Count Her In, which examines the pathways to greater economic inclusion for women and girls everywhere. Still, in today’s day and age, carers don’t get leave entitlement or an allowance that keeps up with inflation and other women who are receiving such benefits. The allowance carers receive has only increased by around 2% in the last two years, when household inflation was over 6% and 7% consecutively. With the number of care households available for children and young people decreasing and the number of foster and kinship care households exiting the system increasing in most areas, the average OzChild carer now has less than three years’ experience. Read our full article below.

I’m a supporter of days like International Women’s Day, as they provide a valuable platform for individuals to express their solidarity with causes they are passionate about. They not only encourage us to think creatively about how we can advocate for positive change but also prompt us to engage in conversations that challenge societal norms. However, what concerns me is that these crucial issues should be actively discussed and addressed year-round, rather than just on designated days or weeks. It's essential to recognise that true progress requires sustained effort and attention. As for 2024, it's encouraging to see the conversation shifting towards economic inclusion. What is even more encouraging is that the topic of economic disparity for female carers has come to the forefront. Foster and kinship carers, who predominantly volunteer their time and resources, find themselves navigating a landscape where their contributions are undervalued, and their economic stability is compromised. It's well and truly time for this critical issue of concern to take centre stage. Unlike traditional employment roles, caring offers little to no financial compensation. While the altruistic nature of volunteer caring is commendable, it should not serve as an excuse for perpetuating economic disparities, especially along gender lines. In the child and family welfare sector, we've been at the forefront of championing inclusion and equality. Nonetheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that there remains significant work ahead, awareness to raise and equity to advocate for. So, this International Women's Day, I will celebrate how far we've come, and encourage you to do so too, while also committing ourselves to the ongoing work of dismantling barriers and fostering true inclusion. It’s time to recognise the invaluable contributions of female carers and provide them with the support and recognition they deserve. It’s time to #CountHerIn
