What Casts the Biggest Environmental Shadow? ⛱️ Did you know that 70-80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined in the design phase? (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2022) This highlights the immense power of sustainable design and eco-conscious decisions right from the start. The concept of the “Environmental Shadow” refers to the hidden environmental effects, or “shadows,” created by human activities and business processes. These shadows aren’t just the obvious direct impacts, but also the indirect and often hard-to-track consequences for our planet and society. 🌱 As innovators, designers, and business leaders, we have the responsibility to minimize this shadow and turn our focus towards regenerative and planet-centered approaches. As a side effect, the same applies to costs. If we manage to generate more value with fewer resources, it can create a classic win-win situation. —————- Graphic adapted from Munro et al.

Did you know, with the rate of environmental disruption right now, green design only slow down climate change.. sustainable design only hold it.. what we need to embrace is a positive impact design, or regenerative.. Join our webinar to learn more
Join us for the 'Embracing Regenerative Design: Shaping the Future of the Built Environment' webinar on May 7, 2024, at 14:00 (UTC+8 SGT). In an increasingly sustainability-conscious world, the real estate industry faces a pivotal crossroads. Let's move beyond traditional success metrics to prioritize long-term sustainability, societal resilience, and environmental regeneration. Discover more about regenerative design with us during the webinar. Let's shape a future where Southeast Asia's built environments are regenerative, not extractive. “Blazing temperatures in 2024 require trail-blazing climate action in 2025,” the UN Secretary-General said, and we can see the devastating impact of the climate crisis right now, at the very beginning of this year. In the UK, where construction represents 42 per cent of CO2 emissions, 62 per cent of waste and 50 per cent of extraction material, our Regenerative Design Primer sets the ball rolling for the transition of our built environment impact – from Degenerative to Regenerative. Our first Regenerative Design Primer, delivered last year, was a 'work in progress'. Now it's time to shape the next iteration and we're setting up working groups to deliver our Primer 2.0. We need YOU to be part of this evolution! Join us online next Tuesday 21st January at 12pm for expert presentations, breakout groups & discussions: · Brief overview of the Regenerative Design Primer and next steps · Regenerative Design Primer - Your feedback · Regenerative Design - What are the blockages? · Regenerative Design - How to move forward Book your place now https://lnkd.in/enz95reA In the short clip below you can watch Marc Seligmann, Head of Sustainability at Maccreanor Lavington and contributor to the Primer document, talk about what it is and why it is important. #DesignPrimer #RegenerativeFuture #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #RegenerativeDesignPrimer #UKArchitectsDeclare #Workshops #PrimerV2 #2025 https://lnkd.in/dGGKcZ-z

Arup Associate and Food and Agriculture Systems Business Leader, Eike Sindlinger, talks to AD about Regenerative Design and our new Primer, which he helped to develop and produce. The Primer gives detailed guidance for architectural practices and others on shifting the paradigm from sustainability to regenerative approaches: from mitigating the built environment's negative impacts to delivering one that makes 'positive' the default. “For me, regenerative design is the first time we actually don’t have the separation (between humans and nature) but we kind of treat them as one, and that is very different because that approach in my book is very change positive” You can download the #Primer for FREE from the Architects Declare website: https://lnkd.in/e2gnRSNc Designed and delivered by AD's Steering Group, a team of expert contributors and reviewers, this new, free 43-page guide complements our earlier Practice Guide and other resources. 📁 Just a few days until we hold our webinar, "An introduction to circular economy in the built environment." Drawing from BRE’s world-leading research and knowledge, our upcoming webinar explores the concept of a #circulareconomy in the #builtenvironment and its value in promoting resource efficiency and sustainability. What will attendees gain? - An understanding of key definitions and principles related to circular economy concepts. - Awareness of the importance of transitioning from a linear to a circular economy model. - Insight into real-world examples of circular economy practices in the built environment. This session is aimed at built environment professionals and organisations, including #construction, #architecture, #engineering, #realestate, facilities management, manufacturing, and #infrastructure companies. It may also be of interest to policymakers, councils, and universities. Speakers include: - Polly Wilkinson, Head of BRE Academy. - Kaie Small-Warner, BRE Head of Responsible Business. - Stuart Blofeld, #SmartWaste BRE Training Lead. - Alejandro Romero, BRE Principal Consultant: Resource Sustainability & #EmbodiedCarbon. - flavie lowres, Principal Consultant – Sustainable Products. 🗓 26 November 2024, 10:30am-11:30am; register here: https://lnkd.in/ec3frgF2 #webinar #sustainable #circularity #netzero

To improve the health of people and planet, we urgently need to design human systems that work with nature, not against it. Regenerative Design is a new and powerful paradigm that will change the way the built environment supports the health of natural systems. But what do we mean by ‘Regenerative Design’, why does it matter, and how can we start to apply it in practice? Arup University’s Foresight team’s latest report is out now – explore it in the link below. https://bit.ly/4bHuUpk #WeAreArup #RegenerativeDesign #SustainableDevelopment #Sustainability
