🚄 Revamping the Connecticut River Bridge: A $1.3 Billion Game-Changer for Amtrak and Northeast Corridor Rail Amtrak has initiated a transformative project by commissioning O&G Industries, Inc., and Tutor Perini to replace the aging Connecticut River Bridge, a key link between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, Conn. This $1.3-billion endeavor, scheduled to start later this year, promises enhanced reliability and capacity for intercity, commuter, and freight services in the Northeast Corridor. Key highlights of the project: - New Two-Track Crossing: Located just south of the existing bridge, featuring a modern movable span. - Increased Speed and Clearance: The new structure will support train speeds up to 70 mph (a 55% increase) and provide an additional 6 ft of vertical clearance for maritime traffic. - Extended Service Life: Designed to last 150 years. The project is backed by an $826.64-million FRA grant and additional funding from Amtrak and the State of Connecticut. Hardesty & Hanover led the design, with AECOM as the construction manager. We're moving closer to breaking ground on the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge by awarding three major contracts to a Flatiron/Herzog Joint Venture, Fay Construction and an AECOM-led team.   This will revitalize the 117-year-old bridge, ushering in: 🕥Faster travel times. 📈Higher reliability. 🚄Safer travel.   Another bonus is that these new contracts aren't just about improving rail travel but also creating more job opportunities for residents, boosting the local economy.    As the longest moveable bridge on the NEC, the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge is a critical link for Amtrak, MARC rail, and Norfolk Southern, supporting over 110 passenger and freight trains daily. The board of directors for the California High-Speed Rail Authority is releasing a request for proposals to build the nation's first 220 mph electrified trains. They hope to award a contract by the end of this year and have already requested proposals from two pre-qualified firms, Alstom Transportation, Inc. and Siemens Mobility, Inc. This is possible, in part, due to the record $3.1 billion federal grant the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded in December 2023, which included funding for new electric trains. By the end of the decade, officials behind the project hope there can be electrified high-speed trains in service. The project's development has created more than 13,000 construction jobs, mostly in the Central Valley, and has environmentally cleared 422 miles for construction of the high-speed rail program from the Bay Area to the Los Angeles Basin, according to officials. They authority says the project will eventually extend into rail connections with Sacramento and San Diego. This is separate from the $3billion federal government grant from the line from Rancho Cucamonga to Las Vegas which is an extension of line from Rancho Cucamonga to Los Angeles. The two projects are targeted for completion in time for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐘𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐲 𝟑𝟏% The Port of Virginia’s newly expanded central rail yard is now fully operational, significantly enhancing the port’s rail capacity to handle 2 million TEUs annually. The $83 million Central Rail Yard project is a key component of the larger $1.4 billion Gateway Investment Program aimed at fortifying the port’s infrastructure and capabilities. The expansion includes the addition of new rail tracks and electric cranes, increasing the port’s on-dock rail capacity by 455,000 TEUs annually—an impressive 31% boost. The development enhances the Port of Virginia’s status as a key East Coast trade hub, complementing ongoing improvements like deeper channels and terminal expansions. By 2025, Norfolk Harbor will have the deepest and widest channels on the U.S. East Coast, supporting two-way traffic for the largest vessels, including fully laden Ultra-Large Container Vesssels (ULCVs). Enhancements at Ports America’s Norfolk International Terminal’s (NIT) North Berth, including new cranes and semi-automated systems, will expand capacity to 1.4 million TEUs annually. “Modernizing and expanding the capability at NIT’s central rail yard gives us additional rail capacity ahead of the completion of the first phase of expansion at NIT’s North Berth [in 2025],” said Stephen A. Edwards, CEO and Executive Director of the Virginia Port Authority. “Cargo volumes coming to the US East Coast are steadily increasing and moving the cargo to market by rail, over The Port of Virginia, is smart business.” Construction of the expanded rail yard began in 2022 and was completed on-time and on-budget. The project received substantial financial support, including a $20 million federal grant and another $20 million from the state Department of Rail and Public Transportation. The funds facilitated the construction of two new rail track bundles and the acquisition of three all-electric cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes. “We are proud to be a steward of this port modernization project contributing a $20 million investment which not only expands the Norfolk International Terminals’ central rail yard, but serves to elevate the entire Port of Virginia as a critical hub for trade on the East Coast,” said Deputy Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg.

The Real Story Behind the Standard (Stephenson) Rail Gauge Did you know the standard railway gauge of 4 feet 8.5 inches wasn't determined by ancient Roman chariots or the width of horse-drawn wagons? It's a popular idea, but an urban myth. The true origin of this seemingly odd measurement traces back to early 19th-century England. Pioneering engineer George Stephenson standardized this gauge during the construction of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and later the famous Liverpool and Manchester Railway. His choice was influenced by the gauge used in the coal mines of northern England, specifically the Killingworth Colliery, where he worked on steam locomotives. Stephenson found that a gauge of 4 feet 8 inches allowed for optimal stability and performance of his locomotives. Later, he added an extra half-inch to reduce friction on curves, finalizing the gauge at 4 feet 8.5 inches. This standard was later adopted by the majority of railways in the UK and eventually became the global standard.
