Justice + Joy National Collaborative president Jeannette Pai-Espinosa in conversation with Shabnam Javdani, Associate Director of New York University's Prison Education Program & Ronald E. Richter (he.him.his), CEO of JCCA at NYU: Marking the 50th anniversary of the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA), this interactive forum will focus on the enduring challenges to preventing juvenile legal system impact and the role of intersecting systems of education, child welfare, and mental health. Together with our panel of experts, we consider the role of the university and its diverse communities in partnered research, education, and action that support opportunities for marginalized youth impacted by these systems in NYC and beyond. Drawing on lessons from the past and acknowledging obstacles in the present, we underscore the research and action needed for a future where underserved youth receive the support they need to engage, connect, create, and thrive. #racialjustice #racialequity #genderjustice #genderequity #restorativejustice #childwelfare #mentalhealth #healingjustice

Justice reform is essential for creating a fairer legal system that addresses systemic inequalities and promotes rehabilitation over punishment. Key issues include tackling mass incarceration, addressing racial and economic disparities, reforming sentencing practices, and providing support for mental health and substance abuse. While political resistance and public perception persist, the growing momentum from grassroots movements and advocacy organizations highlights the urgent need for change. By prioritizing community engagement, data-driven policies, and education for law enforcement and legal professionals, we can build a justice system that upholds the values of equity and fairness for all individuals.

Our next new regional representative is… David Webb 🎉 the regional representative for the South-West. David brings with him a wealth of experience and a passionate commitment to transforming the lives of young people. We are confident that David’s insights and expertise will greatly contribute to our mission of improving the youth justice sector, and building a better, brighter future for young people. 1. How did you enter the field of youth justice? After qualifying as a social worker, I started my career in Probation. I was proud to be a Probation Officer (before it became a correctional service), to help people make positive changes in their lives and to try to remove some of the barriers they faced. I realised that the same opportunities were available in youth justice, but with the chance for change to happen more quickly, earlier in someone's life, helping to improve the lives of children and of people who are harmed through youth offending. 2. What drives you to volunteer for the AYM? YJS Managers have lots of expertise which we can use to help make improvements for children and victims in the youth justice system. As the regional rep for the South-West, my role is to facilitate other YJS managers in my region to share their views so we can have more of a collective voice. 3. What impact do you wish to have on the youth justice system by being a part of the AYM? I hope we can help to make the youth justice system fairer, more inclusive and more progressive. #YouthJustice #CommunityService #SocialJustice #AYM #NewBeginnings #SocialWork

Human Rights and Forensic Social Work 🌍🤝 Forensic social workers are staunch defenders of human rights within the justice system, where they advocate for the dignity and rights of those entangled in legal and correctional processes. Their work is vital in ensuring that human rights standards are upheld in practices and policies affecting individuals in these systems. By conducting thorough assessments and advocating for their clients, forensic social workers help protect the rights of victims, offenders, and their families, ensuring fair treatment and access to justice for all involved. In their daily practice, forensic social workers identify violations of rights and work to rectify these injustices. They are particularly focused on the needs of vulnerable populations, such as minors, the mentally ill, and the economically disadvantaged, who may be at greater risk of rights infringements. These professionals not only provide direct support and intervention but also champion systemic changes that aim to improve legal outcomes and social services for these groups. Their advocacy extends to lobbying for legislative reforms and better implementation of laws that safeguard human rights. Education and awareness are also key components of the forensic social worker’s role in promoting human rights. They educate clients, legal professionals, and the community about human rights issues, enhancing understanding and support for reforms. This educational outreach helps build a more informed public that can advocate for justice and humane treatment in all aspects of the justice system. If you’re passionate about human rights and social justice, consider a career in forensic social work. By joining our courses at www.nifsw.com, you can begin a fulfilling path to defending and promoting human rights within your community. #HumanRights #ForensicSocialWork #SocialJustice #Advocacy #LegalReform #CommunityEducation #MakeADifference
