I have had the same position of not banning TikTok since it first became an issue. Nauseating that presidential candidates vacillate based on politics instead of principle on such basic issues. Here’s the explanation I gave against banning it in an interview: https://lnkd.in/eZbkPgKh Here’s what I wrote about it on 9-14-23: I’m against banning TikTok but not because I spent an afternoon with an influencer. I’m against banning it because it’s a bad precedent to ban every business that outperforms American businesses. Partly because we don’t want other countries harming American companies when we beat them. The answer is to be better at competing, not banning. Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies collect the same data in their countries as TikTok does here so the argument is empty. That’s why I oppose a national ban on TikTok. The better conversation is how social media harms our children and the mental/emotional/physical health of every American that opens it first thing every morning and checks it throughout the day. That’s what government should be looking at, not eliminating the competitors of their biggest donors. And if it was a matter of national security (the holy grail of you can’t question us), most of the technology we use would need to be banned because of embedded spyware. That argument is disingenuous and irrelevant.
