The EU announces today “€1.36 million to support the implementation of the Marine Biodiversity of areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement” from a €3.5 billion worth of EU commitments for the Ocean. Maybe I am reading it incorrectly, but the 2/3rds of the Ocean covering 71% of the planet surface - the Ocean Commons - seems to not have “High Ambition” in regard to its funding? Does this announcement mean the EU’s overall financial commitment to the BBNJ is now €41.36 million? It is concerning to track the overall funding commitments - or lack thereof - towards #BBNJ implementation, whereas 30by30 in the Ocean Commons (included in Marine areas as part of GBF Target 3) requires more than an estimated $7billion according to a 2022 Blue Nature Alliance report. Importantly, it is not possible to achieve 30by30 in the one Ocean without significant progress on conservation measures in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction of which approximately only 1.4% is currently protected. On the road to #UNOC3 , the international political commitment to achieve GBF Target 3 necessitates a credible pathway to funding BBNJ implementation!The EU and it’s member states should provide developing countries with the confidence to ratify the BBNJ Agreement by front loading significant funds to support BBNJ implementation! Today was another missed opportunity towards unlocking ratifications and the BBNJ’s near term entry into force. https://lnkd.in/dwxg_x7p

Don't miss this op-ed in Scientific American by Ocean Conservancy's Meredith McCarthy Moore on the recent #SCOTUS Chevron ruling: "Without Chevron deference, the door is wide open for legal challenges to the clean air and water regulations that erased the nightmares of the past—rivers on fire, waste in unmanaged piles, cancer clusters, and more. Different judges will most likely make different decisions across the U.S., creating a patchwork of loopholes and rollbacks. The courts will no longer defer to experts. Industry-funded studies that appeal to a particular judge might influence their decisions more than the years and decades of research showing why well-regulated systems serve the greater good. Faced with the possibility of endless lawsuits, federal agencies could cease to take on the critical challenges of the present day, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to give us a livable future, tackling the challenges of microplastics polluting our ocean and our body or even keeping us safe from the next pandemic."

We have published a new paper as part of our TRANSFORM project. This paper examines the dynamics of ‘irregularly regulated markets’, specifically those dealing with what we term ‘criminogenic collectables’: #antiquities, #fossils, and #wildlife. Through the lens of ‘irregular regulation’ we consider how inconsistencies and loopholes in legal frameworks contribute to criminal activities in these markets. We outline five ways that such markets can be considered irregular: socially, jurisdictionally, temporally, culturally and discursively. Through this discussion, we address the subjective nature of legality in these markets, contested by cultural, economic, and political influences, and the role of market actors in manipulating perceptions. This study offers a nuanced perspective on the sociology of crime which includes consideration of the objects of crime. Here we emphasize not only the significance of market regulation and legal frameworks in shaping criminal behaviour, but also the agentic qualities of the target objects themselves. We argue that the idea of irregularity is a useful hermeneutic device for considering the grey areas and hot zones of debate that constitute the current global market for contested objects. https://lnkd.in/dJsJ8x3v

My most recent book chapter has just been published with White Horse Press, and completely available in Open Access! "Refuge and Hell Itself: How Two Pacific Islands Shaped the Buccaneer Presence from the Seventeenth to the Eighteenth Century" is part of the book 'Entire of Itself?: Towards an Environmental History of Islands' (ed. Milica Prokić and Pavla Šimková). The book presents a series of "place-centric island histories" with an ecological focus, delving into both the islands’ own stories and their role in larger historical developments. At last, a part of my PhD has now seen the light of publication! 📢🎉 This paper explores the way different perceptions and viewpoints among key policg actors in the EU affect the interpretation and implementation of EU marine environmental policies, with a special focus on the influence of group dynamics on the policy interpretation and looking at the case of strict protection across different EU seas. The paper is a result of a dive into Q and Living Q methodologies and workshops in 3 European regional seas, with particular thanks to the MarBlue22 conference in Constanţa, Romania, which allowed for this publication
