Since 2017, 40 North Atlantic right whales have tragically died, pushing this critically endangered species closer to extinction. The crisis is particularly dire in 2024, with nine losses this year alone, many of which were breeding-age females essential for the species' future. We know that mandatory ship slowdowns and ropeless fishing gear can protect these whales from extinction. For more on this and how you can support conservation efforts to ensure the survival of the North Atlantic right whale, read our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/efsAmdA9 📷 Credit: Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, taken under NOAA research permit #15488

🌊🐠 Did you know the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has received nearly 500 reports of unusual fish behavior affecting over various fish species, including the endangered smalltooth sawfish! These fish have been seen swimming in circles at the surface and losing their ability to stay upright under bright lights at night. 🐟💔 Preliminary water samples from affected areas revealed high concentrations of benthic harmful algae. In response, NOAA's NCCOS has awarded $25,000 to Florida Gulf Coast University, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, and the University of South Alabama to investigate these alarming conditions. Researchers are working closely with partners to collect samples and identify harmful algae in the region. 🧪🔍 This collaborative effort aims to determine the extent of the harmful algae and its potential links to the unusual fish behavior. #FloridaKeys #MarineConservation #BlackinMarineScience #OceanScience #MarineScience #HarmfulAlgaalBlooms #MarineScienceforthaStreetz

Urgent action is needed to protect coastal biodiversity 🌿 🦅 🌍 Driven by factors like superstition and unchecked hunting, poaching poses a significant threat to coastal wildlife. In addition, habitat loss is fueled by deforestation and unplanned urbanisation, worsening the crisis. The alarming statistics provided by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), indicating the extinction of 31 animal species in Bangladesh and the precarious situation of 390 more, underscore the urgency of the situation. Officials from environmental organisations emphasise the urgent need for the proper implementation of the Wildlife Conservation and Safety Act of 2012, along with widespread participation and public awareness campaigns. Through our work at the Wildlife Forensic Fund, we're actively supporting efforts to combat poaching and habitat loss. By investing in wildlife forensic training, research, and educational programs, we're empowering local communities, rangers, and scientists to protect endangered species and preserve coastal ecosystems. Did you know that according to research... 1.6 trillion wild animals are killed annually? Either through - Habitat destruction to Pollution, - Poaching and Illegal wildlife trade to Human-wildlife conflict - Disease outbreaks to Accidental mortality, and - Legal hunting to Natural predation, Wildlife face a multitude of challenges that jeopardize their survival. As we look ahead to 2033, I'm left wondering: What will become of our biodiversity if current trends continue? ------------------------ I'm Opeyemi Blessing OYAWALE, a passionate wildlife conservation researcher and consultant on a mission to reshape how we approach wildlife content. The State of the World’s Migratory Species report, unveiled by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) at the start of the UN wildlife conservation conference (#CMSCOP14) in #Samarkand, is the first inventory to assess the status of migratory species and how they are trying to survive in a world dramatically changed by humans. It found the two biggest threats were overexploitation and loss of habitat because of human activity, such as clearing land for farming, roads and infrastructure. Those activities also fragment migratory species’ pathways, often making it impossible for them to complete their journeys. While some migratory species are improving, nearly half are experiencing population declines, with over one-fifth threatened with extinction. Alarmingly, almost all CMS-listed fish face #extinction. This comprehensive assessment underscores the urgent need for global cooperation to address the threats facing migratory species, from overexploitation to habitat loss. Let’s translate this science into action and ensure the survival of #MigratorySpecies #Conservation #CMSReport2024 🦅🐟 https://lnkd.in/e9EH6iz6
