We congratulate Ursula von der Leyen on being re-appointed as President of the European Commission 🇪🇺 The prosperity of European fisheries and fishers relies on a healthy marine environment, and fisheries must be managed hand in hand with ocean protection. Our reaction ➡ https://bit.ly/3Wa8jvp

Destructive bottom trawling is rampant in Europe’s marine protected areas. The European Union (EU) seabeds are the most trawled in the world, causing damage to vital ecosystems that lasts generations. Urge EU lawmakers to protect the ocean, fisheries, and our future. https://lnkd.in/dmqpVDX2

This week the 2nd meeting of the Member States' Joint Special Group on the EU Marine Action Plan was convened in Brussels 🐟🐬 The meeting particularly focused on critical topics such as by-catch of sensitive species, innovative fishing gears, impacts on the seabed, and fisheries measures in Marine Protected Areas in light of recent International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) advice and data collection exercises by the European Commission. We were also joined by a diverse group of stakeholders online who shared their valuable insights on the Action Plan 🌊💙 #MarineProtectedAreas #ICES #EuropeanCommission #BiodiversityStrategyfor2030 #EuActionPlan

The Sea Turtles, who were once plentiful, are now facing a severe reduction in their numbers. Fisheries bycatch, marine pollution and coastal development have significantly impacted the turtles of the Caribbean. Legislation protecting these gentle creatures and their eggs has successfully increased their population. Let's continue to protect all species of sea turtles across the region. --- #worldseaturtleday #protecttheturtles #CCSA #caribbeanclimatesmartaccelerator

The EU Council negotiations on Baltic Sea fishing quotas were very difficult this year and all MS concerned had to make sacrifices in order to reach a consensus and balance fish stock recovery with fisheries Communities socio-economic needs. Despite an agreement being reached, the difficulty of the talks raises an important question—are the current tools enough to restore fish stocks and marine ecosystems, or is it time to rethink the approach? https://lnkd.in/gDq_VcXv

Climate change also has an impact on the marine and fisheries sectors, which depend a lot on nature and the climate itself. Fishermen and coastal communities are part of those who have the biggest impact of climate change on the marine and fisheries sector. One of the impacts felt is the reduction in catches, which of course has an impact on fishermen's increasingly small incomes

So climate change is increasing mobilisation of contaminants, which in turn harm primary productivity, reducing production of essential nutrients for critters further up food webs. It is well past time that we looked wider than just temperature- when linked factors are causally involved- like ocean pollution. Increased microplastics reduce zooplankton and toxify those that survive, impacting fish metabolism and changing their body composition through endocrine disruption. Austral are well place to lead the seafood industry to expand their understanding of threats to start acting and advocating around reducing ocean pollution, they've set a sound footprint with carbon emissions, now it is time to look at all the other emissions impacting fisheries.
