Thank you to Reps. Jared Huffman, Ed Case, Mary Peltola and James Moylan for introducing new legislation to reauthorize the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the primary law governing U.S. marine fisheries. Great to see International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) Chris Williams on the BBC highlighting the plight of migrant fishers in the UK. The BBC investigation found that 35 fishers from the Philippines, Ghana, India & Sri Lanka were victims of trafficking between 2012 and 2020. The investigation follows a recent International Labour Organization report which found that in 2021 there were at least 128,000 forced labour victims in commercial #fishing globally. Given the isolated nature of the sector, the actual figure is likely to be higher. LINK: https://lnkd.in/eV_RU-Ed There are many root causes of forced labour in the fishing industry, including severe restrictions on fishers’ ability to exercise their rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining - either in law or practice. This has to end. #EndSlavery

No Trawl, No Problem! 🐚 A benefit of MPAs is the “spillover effect”. The #spillovereffect is one way that no-take marine reserves have a positive influence on adjacent fisheries. Target fish migrate outside the boundaries of protected areas as populations increase where they can be caught by fishers. In the Irish Sea, a network of marine protected areas around the Isle of Man helped to recover commercial stocks of king scallops. After five small areas were closed to bottom trawling, king scallops were five times more abundant in non-trawled areas, increasing their reproductive potential by over 1,200%. 🤝 Do you want to hear more success stories like this for B.C. #ecosystems? Follow the link in our bio to send a pre-written letter telling government officials you support the protection of 30% of Canadian oceans by 2030: https://lnkd.in/gEkdxicD #MPAs #oceanconservation #marineprotectedareas #MPANetwork #protecttheoceans #ecosystemmanagement #marineconservation #oceanlife

Turtles, whales, dolphins, dugongs, rays, and non-target shark species all fall victim to shark nets. In addition to causing suffering for marine life, nets also create a false sense of security for beachgoers. Queensland’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries admits that nets do not create a barrier or prevent sharks from coming close to beaches. So why are nets still used? It’s time to remove shark nets and adopt non-lethal, animal-safe alternatives. 🦈 Learn more about the use of shark nets at https://lnkd.in/erMMYcAv Image: Envoy Foundation #netsoutnow #removesharknets
