What skills do we have in IT?
Most CIOs and IT managers have a good understanding of the skills possessed by their direct reports. However, a consolidated picture of the entire IT department and all IT staff is often missing. Establishing a shared perspective requires the use of consistent taxonomy and assessment approaches; otherwise, this shared picture cannot be achieved.
Too frequently, CIOs aim to make organizational decisions requiring executive board approval without being able to support their reasoning with data, which could later be used for goal/result comparisons. Making informed decisions should be data-driven.
The SFIA framework provides skills taxonomy, skill level descriptions, and assessment methods that can be followed to ensure the objectivity of collected data. Adopting a structured and systemic approach to skill management is a prerequisite for good IT governance and overall IT quality.
