I really like what Coach Trinchieri says to the player, who is becoming frustrated after missing shots, because he offers reassurance and puts poor performances and misses into perspective: "You are not defined by a bad game. You are not defined by an open shot missed. You are defined by your attitude, your culture, being a good team mate. Being a good human being." Coach Trinchieri also fulfils a key basic psychological need - the need to feel competent. The need for competence reflects an athlete’s need to feel that he or she is effective in meeting any demands (Duda, 2013) and thus view one’s behaviour (i.e., playing sport) as being effective (Amorose, 2007). The coach does this by showing his belief in the player's ability: "You are a natural shooter. If you think, your past performance determines your future performance, it’s time to rethink your thought.   Newcastle United Football Club has been teaching us this lesson since last year. The team which was fighting relegation battles in the Premier League for the last 20 years, relegated twice to championships in that period, have surpassed all expectations and delivered superior set of performances last year, securing top 4 position in the premier league, and a spot in European Champions League Football, after 20 years of being away, outcompeting the likes of Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea, who set in the grandstand this year. Today, in this top tier competition, they played Paris Saint-Germain, one of the best clubs in Europe and have beaten them 4-1, in a very excellent display of performance both strategically from the manager and tactility from the players. As we stand the Magpies sets top of the table in their group which is described as " the group of death". Newcastle FC have shown us that, there is no serial correlation between time (t-1) performance and present performance at time (t). Generally speaking, this can be extend to any organizational type, not only world football, and to (n) number of years, going backward and forward, as follows: Your performance level at time (t-1, t-2,……, t-n,…….) aka past performance, doesn't determine your present performance at time (t), or your anticipation and vision for a better future performances in the upcoming periods (t+1, t+2,.....t+n,......).   The correlation, if it exists, it only exists in the mind. ICYMI: Nick Galatas on addressing the link between National Second Tier with promotion and relegation: The National Second Tier (NST) competition is building towards its expected start date of March/April 2025, but its final structure has not been settled. While eight teams were initially announced with representation from Victoria and New South Wales, we are still yet to find out who will make up the rest of the ‘national’ component. We will at least have an update on this around June 2024, as the Request for Proposal (RFP), Assessment & Review and Completion Phases are all completed. Association of Australian Football Clubs (AAFC) Chairman Nick Galatas has been a vocal advocate and involved in establishing the NST from its inception, but despite the previously announced foundation clubs, there is still work to do to ensure the NST starts in the best possible shape. At this stage, eight foundation clubs have been confirmed, but there is a push to increase the number to at least 12. Despite 26 clubs advancing to the RFP phase, only 8 foundation clubs proved to be a major drop off from what appeared a healthy pool of teams to choose from. “There were 26 clubs that looked to be in a great position to be selected to start in the new NST,” Galatas told Soccerscene. “From those, it would be expected to get 12 for a kick-off in 2024 but didn’t pan out that way.” A lack of structure around how promotion and relegation will work with the NPL does leave some uncertainty for the clubs left out of the NST. Many clubs remain eager to be part of the expected four additional teams to be added for the competition’s commencement early in 2025. For Football Australia, consistency will need to be applied across the board about how clubs go up and down between the NST and NPL when promotion and relegation commences. Football Queensland has made rules that a Queensland coming into the NST will revert to the competition it was in before it joined the NST. That is inconsistent with the approach of other member federations. For example, with Preston Lions FC competing in Victoria Premier League 1 in 2024 prior to the commencement of NST, if they get relegated is it one step below to NPL Victoria or the original league they are in now? Galatas outlined how everyone must be on the same page to form a unified system. “As a scenario, we can think ahead to, say, 2027 and it’s the third year of competition, which is may also have expanded by then and include Queensland teams,” he said. “For example, if, say, Preston Lions from Victoria and Sunshine Coast Fire FC from Queensland are relegation candidates in that season, it’s untenable that those teams would face different predicaments if relegated with Preston to the NPL and Sunshine Coast to oblivion. “Hypothetically if we talk about relegation, everyone agrees that a Victorian-based club would be relegated to NPL… #Football #Soccer #FootballNews

Here's an example of something I call a Peer Cluster. It's a group of clubs (in this case, English Premier League and English Championship clubs) that are, you guessed it, peers. Clubs too think about their peers. On and off the field, these are the clubs that they see as their true competitive set. If Manchester City Football Club brings in half a billion in revenue or wins the UEFA Champions League, it doesn't necessarily mean Leeds United had a bad season. Anyway, it's an interesting lens because these groups tend to perform similarly. Here's a graph of a peer cluster that I created for a club analysis that I did recently. It's a group that you might consider mid-table Premier League mainstays combined with a few that bounce in and out. All legendary clubs in their own way. See the groupings? They all sell well, though a couple are at the bottom left. And there's one in a quadrant by itself. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿⚽️ An internal survey to understand the experiences of match officials in Welsh football has revealed that 1 in 4 Referees have experienced physical abuse. The survey conducted by the FAW, which received responses from 282 match officials, detailed that 88% of respondents have also received verbal abuse whilst officiating at some point in their refereeing career. The FAW is committed to ensuring football is for everyone, where everyone can feel respected & supported across the game. The FAW & Area Associations are therefore introducing initiatives which aim to reduce incidents of abuse, improve discipline across the country & consequently increase the number of active Referees. As England takes on the Netherlands in the 2024 Euros football tournament today (soccer for my US friends and colleagues), what does Gareth Southgate, Manager of the England team have to teach us about leadership? Here’s my takeaway: applying kindness to skill leads to results. Kindness, you say? But this is competitive sport! While I can’t argue sensibly about how much shift there should be between a back three and a back four, or whether substitutions should come on earlier when play is lacklustre given reserve bench strength, over the last six years of watching Southgate, it’s clear to me that he cares about his players.  He engages them warmly when they have done well and when they have not. In his demeanour and commentary, he makes it clear he believes in their talents and contributions to the team. He encourages them to not give up – to keep pressing forward. Despite vitriol by some pundits and armchair enthusiasts for being too soft, too reactive, and not tactical, Southgate has in fact succeeded – where a number of others have failed to knit golden generations of exceptional players into a united, winning force. The numbers say it all: the only coach to get the national team to two quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final. He's a former player who has known adversity missing a crucial penalty at the Euros in 1996 which contributed to England not advancing to the semifinals. In the final of the 2020 Euros, he did his best to shield young, star player, Bukayo Saka from abuse when he missed a penalty.  But Southgate’s message was clear: stay the course, keep practicing, do what you do in training. It paid off last Saturday when Saka and the other penalty takers each sent the ball to the back of the net in order for England to advance over Switzerland to the semi-final. No matter what happens in tonight’s game, there is much we can take back to our own teams. Faith in their ability, sustained encouragement even when things go wrong, kindness and respect. All winning ingredients for achievement. #leadership
