Wow... what a week I've had! Never in all my years of advocating for animals and our planet did I imagine I'd be in the same room as the President Biden and the future King of England, talking about the importance of shifting towards a plant-based food system. But that's exactly what Matthew Glover and I were fortunate enough to be doing earlier this week. On behalf of Generation Vegan, we had the incredible opportunity of attending The Earthshot Prize's Innovation Summit in New York, where we heard from visionary environmentalists, like: - HRH Prince William (Founder, The Earthshot Prize) - Mike Bloomberg (Bloomberg Philanthropies) - Dame Jacinda Ardern (Former PM of New Zealand) - Matt Damon (actor and founder, Water.org) - Jose Andres (Founder, World Central Kitchen) - Mark Carney (UN Special Envoy) - Jane Fonda (FONDA FAMILY FOUNDATION INC) - Dame Christiana Figueres (Executive Secretary of the UN) - Hannah Jones (CEO, The Earthshot Prize) - Wanjira Mathai (World Resources Institute) - Benedict Cumberbatch (actor and environmentalist) And many more - all of whom are working towards an equitable, healthy and sustainable future. During the event, 15 finalists for the 2024 Earthshot Prize were announced. GenV nominated 66 incredible #plantbased solutions for this prestigious award, and while none of them were selected this time (sad face), I remain very optimistic about our chances for 2025... Because plant-based solutions are only getting better! The summit was a powerful reminder of the innovative work being done around the globe to address climate change. And the launch of Tilt Collective was equally inspiring, illustrating why a plant-rich food system is essential for addressing the interconnected crises of climate change, health, and nature caused by intensive animal agriculture, and how we can work together to make this happen. I'm proud and honored to be a part of this important movement, and so inspired by those working alongside me. Everyone I've listened to or spoken with over the past few days has motivated me to work harder, smarter, and with a renewed belief that CHANGE IS POSSIBLE. I recently listened with great interest to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's podcast on biomimicry's role in transforming industries, and it resonated deeply with our mission at Davines Group | Certified B Corp.    Biomimicry, which involves looking to nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies for solutions to human problems, is integral to our approach. Climate week in my hometown, so I'm looking at it with fresh eyes. Like everyone else, I feel I'm about to enter the whirlwind. Does it even matter? Does anyone actually listen or are we all just posturing? Well, here are a few places I'm showing up in a sincere attempt to be honest about what's working, what's been really hard, and what we need: Monday, September 23: I'll be speaking briefly about Climate Solutions at the Mother Jones/Grist event, "Better Worlds Ahead: Realizing our Brighter Climate Future." It is great to kickoff with a strong dose of optimism, and I'll be speaking about climate solutions. I'm also looking forward to gathering with the amazing women who are part of the powerful (and fun!) Pleiades changemakers network. Tuesday, September 24 is all about Regen House: https://lnkd.in/gMu_Z4pH. There are several sessions about scaling up #regenag. Together with Oatly's CEO, Jean-Christophe Flatin, we'll be doing something a little different: a coffee tasting (with Oatly in the iced lattes, of course) as an entry point to discuss the impact of climate change on our foods and what Oatly is doing to address the challenge through our commitment to regenerative oats. On Wednesday, September 25 I'll be in listening mode at The New York Times all-day Climate Forward summit. Given that research shows that most Americans are misguided as to what are the most impactful actions they can take to reduce their climate impact (hint, it's eat more plant based foods, not install more solar panels) AND that one explanation for this misunderstanding is that over 90% of climate journalism does not mention the impacts of livestock agriculture (but thank you The New York Times for the new series on the true cost of food (https://lnkd.in/gMuA4R-p), I'm hoping to listen for this shift in focus. Later that day I'm excited to hear my colleague Caroline Reid speak at Solutions House, continuing the theme of optimism. Thursday, September 26 is a big day for Oatly. We are co-hosting the Mission Driven Brand Summit: Building the Future of the Food System, together with Food Tank, Vital Farms, King Arthur Baking Company, and Tony's Chocolonely. This closed door session is for us alone - all the purpose driven, solutions-oriented brands and what we need to succeed against #bigfood. Friday, September 27 wraps up with a celebration and I'll be joining my fellow Board members and the leadership of Food Tank to discuss strategies for the future over dinner with the imcomparable Dan Barber at Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture. Now following on #RegenHouse day on #regenerativeagriculture for #climateweeknyc, a session by Mars on investing in #ClimateSmart Ag to build a #Sustainable and #Resilient #AgriculturalSystem Consistent with its #netzero strategy, Mars made a decision that as a business, they are funding the transition by investing $1 billion in the next few years to help the #supplychain decarbonise 🌱 Panellists explored #Regenerativefarming and the positive impact on #waterreplenishment, #biodiversity growth and #soilimprovement. Regen programmes for Mars have to be farmer-centric, and coalitions of farms who support each other, train each other and organise joint initiatives are key. But how to scale? How to go from 10 farmers to 100 to 100,000? How to reduce emissions in dairy 🐄 using regen ag? How to reduce global emissions by 9% annually to meet targets to 2030 when last year we actually increased emissions by 1%? Mars is doing this by normalising sustainability as a procurement job to reimagine the supply and supply chain. Investment in working with farmers not transactionally, but for mutual commercial benefit linked to decarbonisation, has helped deliver targets to date. The mutuality of services and benefits in stakeholder capitalism that goes back to Mars’ founders principles way back in 1947 makes this an inspiring story. It was also lovely to meet Jackie Mars, and chat about their hopes and dreams for the future of a company and of the planet.
