"What I Wanted to Convey" (XXXVI) written by Hayao Kawai (Psychoanalyst, University Professor) "The 'I' in the Dream” (1) First of all, the author is engaged in psychotherapy, and among the techniques used in that work, dream analysis is the most important. Recently, there seems to be an increasing interest in dream analysis, but generally, the meaning of dreams is not yet recognized. When people come for counseling due to conditions like neurosis, and I suggest they record their dreams, they often give me strange looks. Even without much explanation, once they start doing it, they usually understand experientially, so I simply advise them to record their dreams without going into lengthy explanations. However, for those who still find it difficult to accept, I might say, 'You've tried everything so far without success, and since you haven't found any good solutions through conventional means, why not try relying on your dreams?' In fact, many neurotic individuals who come to me for therapy have already tried various efforts and received plenty of advice from friends and other mentors. When all these 'conscious' efforts are deemed futile, it seems there is no alternative but to rely on the power of the 'unconscious,' and for that, it is advisable to lend an ear to dreams, often referred to as the 'language of the unconscious.' Psychotherapy, in essence, relies to the maximum extent on the individual's self-healing power who seeks treatment. The challenge lies in understanding how the self-healing power inherent within the individual operates and providing avenues for its utilization. The efforts made by neurotic individuals so far, along with advice from others, inevitably rely on the individual's current state of being, which is why they often fail. Our aim is to rely on the potential inherent within the individual, irrespective of their current state. Below is a dream of a person who suffered from neurosis for a long time and contemplated death multiple times. (Continue to next paragraph)
