With tusks like theirs, it is easy to see why walruses are some of the most recognizable animals on the planet. They’re also among our favorite Arctic residents, populating the beaches of Spitsbergen and Greenland with their sizable, sleepy herds. Here are ten facts about the walrus (specifically the Atlantic walrus, which we see on our trips) taken from our website and combined with colorful clips of these beloved creatures.

Human Wildlife Conflict in general, and Human Elephant Conflict in particular, have visible direct impacts (destruction of crops, injuries…) but hidden indirect costs (also called opportunity costs), such as the fear of encountering wild animals that can lead to poor school attendance for example, also have tremendous impact on populations living alongside wildlife. This paper illustrates a way to address these indirect costs. #humanwildlifeconflict #HWC #humanelephantconflict #coexistence #HEC

Great read ! illegal construction is one of the biggest problems. There should be more emphasis on urban planning and sustainable development. How can we contribute from our individual level ? - Stay informed about local environmental laws and regulations. - Be aware of ongoing development projects in your community. - Raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural habitats among your neighbors, friends, and community. - Engage in discussions and advocate for sustainable development practices. Report Violations: - Report any illegal construction or habitat destruction to local authorities, such as municipal bodies, environmental agencies, or forest departments. - Use local helplines or online platforms established for reporting environmental violations. - Attend local government meetings and voice your concerns about unauthorized construction or development projects. - Establish connections with local authorities responsible for environmental protection. Support Environmental NGOs: - Volunteer or support local environmental NGOs that work towards habitat preservation and wildlife conservation. 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡! In a collaborative effort between Trinity College Dublin and the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES), Oregon State University, we attached an animal-borne camera and inertial measurement unit to a 7-metre female basking shark in Ireland's first National Marine Park. This allowed us to gather unprecedented data on how these gentle giants respond to collisions with boats. The findings highlight the urgent need for protective measures and greater awareness among boaters to safeguard these endangered creatures. 🔍 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 👉 The shark immediately dove to the seafloor and moved to deeper waters post-strike. 👉 Activity levels dropped significantly, raising concerns about long-term impacts. 👉 Calls for a legally binding boating code and speed restrictions in aggregation areas. 👉 Read our full article to discover more: https://lnkd.in/gRWM9SkG A huge thank you to our collaborators and funders: Future Legend Films, Oregon State University, National Geographic, and the Human Frontiers Science Project. #MarineScience #Conservation #BaskingSharks #Research #WildlifeProtection #OceanConservation #MarineLife #Sustainability 👉

Amazing insights on shark behavior from an activity tag on a shark that was subsequently hit by a boat. Great example of new biodiversity monitoring methods that are transforming how we sense the natural world. I write about the need for monitoring & the potential of new methods in the Irish times Soundscapes of the natural world can tell us so much https://lnkd.in/ejxVZCt7 New tech is just part of the solution for a national biodiversity monitoring programme - loads of monitoring goes on as part of Environmental Impact Assessments & subsequent planning conditions but it goes nowhere. The data are not accessible & not used to trigger action.

There's only one creature we'd feature on #WhaleSharkWednesday during #SharkWeek! Despite the misleading moniker, the whale #shark is indeed a shark, NOT a #whale! They are the biggest #fish in the sea, and if you're lucky you might see one in a sanctuary like #FlowerGardenBanks National Marine Sanctuary. Learn more about this gentle giant: https://ow.ly/Fgey50SybcP #WildlifeWednesday
