WORLD SEAFARERS DAY (JUNE 25):
Every June 25 marks ‘World Seafarers Day’ as also recognized by the United Nations. This special day was set aside to recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy, maritime security and civil society as a whole.
SEAFARERS are those officers and ratings employed to serve onboard any type of marine vessel including both serving personnel and the veterans. They include among others naval personnel, various marine scientists, coast guards, fishermen and cruise ship/work vessel captains and crew personnel working in local and international cargo vessels, offshore service boats, oil spill response vessels, recreational/tourism vessels and naval ships/military liners such as the submarines.
Historically and unlike air travel, seafarers had existed long ago right from the days when our LORD JESUS CHRIST was physically on earth where in one occasion, HE commanded ‘peace be still’ to a raging storm around the boat conveying HIM and HIS disciples. Same with the vessels mentioned when Jonah was asked to go to Nineveh and not Tarshish.
The importance of the activities of seafarers cannot be underestimated considering the movement of goods and services in huge quantities compared to aircrafts and from city to city, one country to another and continent to another continent. Also, unlike air travels, seafarers spend a lot of time on international waters to move goods and services around the globe with attendant safety related issues to contend with. Previously and even now, seafarers are also involved in moving vessels on waterways during military conflicts.
Interestingly, seafarers are now HSE focused more than ever before. Thus, the theme for this year (2024) celebration is “Seafarers’ contribution to making the maritime sector a safer workplace “. And also last year (2023) theme was focused on “the importance of the role of seafarers in marine pollution control cannot be overemphasized”.
It’s on this note and with profound decorum that I am asking you to join me in wishing all serving seafarers and veterans a ‘HAPPY SEAFARERS DAY’.
