ICYMI: U.S. News & World Report’s medical-school rankings are out! Except they aren’t rankings this year — they’re tiers. Schools are classified in one of four tiers, and listed alphabetically within their tiers. Some critics of rankings have advocated for tiers as a better alternative to ordinal rankings, but it doesn’t seem as if U.S. News analysts agree. Instead, it appears that so many medical schools didn’t turn in data to U.S. News this year that analysts couldn’t do their usual ranking. Nonsubmitters — which include Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pennsylvania, and other well-known institutions — are unranked, and don’t appear in the lists at all.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in medical education and the physician workforce is critical for everyone’s health. At ACSOM, we are committed to integrating DEI programs into our curriculum to help future doctors better understand and address the unique issues faced by each patient, thereby providing superior medical care. I encourage everyone to take 4 minutes to read this insightful op-ed by LaShyra “Lash” Nolen, MD, MPP, an internal medicine resident physician and graduate of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Kennedy School. Dr. Nolen presents compelling evidence on the efficacy of DEI efforts in medicine and explains why current attacks on DEI in healthcare are dangerous for patient care. Together, let’s champion diversity and inclusion in medical education for a healthier future.

Great piece out in STAT, penned by Ravi Thadhani MD, MPH of Emory Healthcare and Anne Klibanski of Mass General Brigham, on the major challenges facing academic medical centers, including investment in great research programs. It’s time to change the way research is structured within these academic centers. They need efficiencies and solutions for the wide-ranging financial and operational challenges (including staffing) that hold research back: “Academic medical centers must strive for a more efficient and integrated system to carry out research. These centers have similar needs for research operations and managing research facilities. Each center currently manages these items separately, and their respective supporting infrastructures have grown disproportionately. Cost efficiencies can be achieved by pursuing system-wide agreements, for example, and working cooperatively when opportunities arise.” This is exactly why Topo and others in our space exist – to offer providers and systems critical management, infrastructure, staff and services to scale research – which in turn impacts patient access to transformative care. https://lnkd.in/eaRi7pQQ
