In 2023, our product marketing team lead 3 major launches: one tier 1 feature, one new product line, and one acquisition. Upon reflecting on what made these 3 launches successful, this has been my biggest takeaway: Design a launch plan with ✨ Product-Launch Fit ✨ Here's what I mean by this. We've all heard of Product-Market Fit. I think the same applies to launch plans. All too often teams go into launch planning by looking at what they did for their last launch or what another company has done and just assuming that's what they should do again. For example, if a live webinar was part of your previous big launch and it was well received, you just assume you need to plan a live webinar for your next launch. But this ignores the Product. If the thing you are launching has mass appeal in your industry (so your main goal is awareness), it's easy to explain, and has the potential to go viral, then getting people to attend a 45-minute webinar to hear the news doesn't fit. Instead, a launch plan that includes short-form video for social, influencer marketing, podcast placements, teasing out the launch, etc. is a better fit. Shoutout to Emily Frazier who designed and lead a launch plan like this for Postscript's newest feature Onsite Opt-In that made us go viral 🚀 On the other hand, if you're launching a product that is more complicated to explain, has a more niche target audience, has a premium price point, then virality might not be the top goal. With SMS Sales, we hosted private dinner events in LA and NY before our big public launch, inviting our top prospects with custom mailers, and used that face time with our founders to give the pitch and start those conversations which lead to some of our biggest wins. So if you're in a launch planning meeting and someone says "X was so cool last time, we should do it again" or "we always do Y for our launches" ask if it actually has Product-Launch Fit with your new shiny thing. #productmarketing
