This #WEW24 we celebrate innovative floating offshore wind technologies, and the opportunities they can create to maximise the potential of clean, green energy generated offshore. 🌊 Fixed bottom windfarms rely more upon seabed conditions and water depths, whilst floating windfarms can be built further offshore in water depths that wouldn’t have previously been possible to operate from. With higher average wind speeds further offshore, floating technology generates more clean, green electricity for homes and businesses. ✨ RenewableUK predicts that floating wind will represent well over half of UK offshore wind generation by 2050, highlighting just how crucial this rapidly evolving technology will be in our drive towards a decarbonised future. FINLAND'S FIRST COMMERCIAL-SCALE OFFSHORE WIND FARM UNDERWAY Work is underway on Finland’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Korsnäs, located off the country's west coast. With a capacity of 1.3 to 2.5 GW, it is expected to produce 5-7 TWh of fossil-free electricity annually - enough to power over two million homes. This project is a joint venture between European energy company, Vattenfall, and Metsähallitus, the manager of Finland's state-owned lands. Teams are conducting geophysical surveys and environmental assessments to ensure minimal impact on local wildlife and ecosystems. Set to begin construction in the 2030s, the Korsnäs wind farm will contribute significantly to Finland's goal of carbon neutrality by 2035. A few weeks ago I was in Port Talbot to talk to Associated British Ports about their £500 million investment to turn the port into a manufacturing hub for floating offshore wind turbines. The waters around Port Talbot are too deep to build wind turbines into the seabed, but it's no longer necessary to. We can now deploy wind turbines on huge, football pitch-sized platforms, attached to the bottom only with anchors. This innovation could vastly expand the amount of wind energy we can exploit around the world. In climate circles there's a lot of talk about a just transition - the hope that jobs lost in old polluting industries can be replaced by jobs in new, clean ones. Sometimes this talk relies on a lot of wishful thinking - clean industries won't always be based in the same places as polluting ones. But ABP's investment is a perfect fit for the just transition concept. Just at the moment when Port Talbot Steelworks (the UK's largest carbon emitter) is closing its blast furnaces, bringing job losses, a new industry is arriving in the region, bringing skilled work and cheap clean energy. ABP will be working with Anthony Glick of the Swansea-based Marine Power Systems and BW Ideol to build the turbines' floating platforms. A recent performance report on the offshore wind turbine TetraSpar at Norway's METCentre is challenging one of the most common critiques of wind power: bird collisions. For almost two years, extensive monitoring by Spoor, a Norwegian company, has tracked over 21,000 bird passages around the turbine — without a single fatal collision. This is a groundbreaking finding for the wind energy industry. The results suggest that offshore wind turbines can coexist with wildlife in a way that mitigates previous environmental concerns. The data collected will be crucial in advancing the case for more offshore wind farms, which are vital for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, lowering air pollution, and combating climate change. This is so interesting! Was really great to learn how Robin Radar Systems is helping prevent downtime of offshore wind turbines by using floating radar technology. They deter birds and bats - many of which are endangered species - from offshore sites in the North Sea where plenty of the world's biggest operators have facilities. Sadly when animals collide with these structures, it results in fatalities and has a significant impact on the renewable energy infrastructure. 🎄 'Tis the Season... ...for renewable energy conferences in Australia. This week we have Australia Wind Energy 2024 in Melbourne, and next week many of us will be heading to the Australia Clean Energy Summit by the Clean Energy Council in Sydney. Yesterday, I joined a panel on expanding the Australian wind energy market through creative financing and offtake structures, and which role Government shall play in this. There is plenty of capital available in the market. And sophisticated developers, off-takers and investors. 💪 What we need more of is good projects that get to the starting line for construction and enough confidence that it can reach the finish line to get connected in time and cost. 🏃♀️ The Government, the States, Generators and Retailers have great targets of the GW and GWs of renewables they plan to install or contract. But so far, we are all lagging behind. This reminds me of a Vestas campaign about Offshore wind in Europe, urging governments to rethink their auctions to ensure that plans turn into actions. I think if you ignore the water and imagine the Australian landscape, and exchange auction design with permitting processes across the federal and state governments, this video is quite applicable for us in Australia.
