Seeing as today is #BlueMonday, we wanted to take a look back at the wonderful project Orpington Hospital undertook to improve staff facilities to help with staff wellbeing. The Trust understood that providing their staff a dedicated place to rest would help with their wellbeing leading to improved retention and recruitment rates. MP Gareth Bacon, who opened the facility, said, “We know how important facilities like this are, and I am very pleased that we have been able to create such a fantastic space. I hope staff will enjoy this facility for many years to come”. Read the full story on our website -> https://zurl.co/C5dkP

Hospital or Home? Aged care is undergoing unprecedented changes, leading to an identity crisis within the sector. Residential aged care currently provides two distinct yet interdependent services: hospitality and healthcare. These services often compete with one another, creating a challenging balance. However, to meet the needs and expectations of aged care consumers, both must coexist effectively. On the hospitality/home side, consumers deserve a comfortable and personal environment. This includes well-appointed rooms, quality food, gardens, scenic views, spaces encouraging privacy and independence, and inviting social areas. These elements create a sense of home and significantly enhance the quality of life for residents. Conversely, aged care consumers frequently have healthcare needs that may conflict with hospitality priorities. Functional considerations like accessible beds and bathrooms, spaces designed for mobility aids, and layouts that accommodate medication carts or lifting equipment are essential. Furthermore, environments must be tailored to support efficient care delivery and staff needs, such as clear lines of sight and accessibility. In a hospital setting, hospitality is secondary to healthcare, with narrow beds, average food, and minimal privacy often deemed acceptable because the primary focus is medical care. In a hotel, however, these conditions would be unacceptable because the emphasis is on comfort and hospitality. Aged care must bridge these two worlds, offering a blend of both. As the population ages and becomes increasingly frail, the distinction between healthcare provided in aged care and acute hospital settings is diminishing. With acute services under pressure, the clinical responsibilities placed on the aged care sector have grown. Providers are now tasked with managing increasingly complex medical needs while still maintaining a home-like environment. To navigate this identity challenge, aged care must evolve to deliver a harmonious balance between hospitality and healthcare, ensuring that residents’ diverse needs are met without compromising on either front. #agedcare #hospital #home #healthcare

SYNC ensures seamless coordination and timely delivery of essential resources to support aged care facilities across Australia and New Zealand. By streamlining the supply chain, SYNC enhances the quality of care and enables aged care facilities to meet the evolving needs of their residents effectively. Building on this expertise, SYNC contributed to the redevelopment of St John of God Health Care Berwick Hospital in 2017, supplying 100 prefabricated bathroom pods across two distinct design variants. This marked the second St John of God hospital to benefit from SYNC pods after their successful implementation at Midlands Hospital in Western Australia.

Did you know? Nearly 93% of Australians in residential aged care facilities rely on mobility aids. For OTs, facility managers, and healthcare workers — how are you caring for your clients who use mobility aids? Proper care of mobility aids goes beyond basic cleanliness. It's about preventing the spread of germs, maintaining equipment integrity, and ultimately, enhancing the quality of life for those who rely on them. Key considerations for mobility aid care include: ✅ Understanding individual needs: Each user has unique requirements. Check client notes for specific instructions on mobility and equipment handling. ✅ Assessing mobility capacity: Evaluate users' abilities to move independently, including getting in and out of bed and walking distances. ✅ Ensuring safe environments: Verify that walkways are clear and accessible for all mobility aids. ✅ Regular equipment checks: Inspect brakes, wheels, and rubber tips for damage to prevent accidents. ✅ Prioritising hygiene: Implement a thorough cleaning regimen, including regular sanitisation and deep cleaning for all mobility aids. Pure Wheelchairs offers specialised deep cleaning services to maintain optimal hygiene and prolong the life of your mobility equipment. Our hospital-grade cleaning process eliminates harmful bacteria and ensures the safety of your residents. A study in Denmark identified 64% of transfers performed in a long-term care facility as potentially high risk and unhealthy for the staff, of which the majority, 74%, were being performed in the bathroom area. The study pointed to one main gap related to time consumption and ergonomics in care practices surrounding resident hygiene. This was caused by limited access to appropriate, modern hygiene equipment for showering. In lieu of this quantified risk the organisation implemented new transfer and hygiene processes utilising the Arjo Carendo hygiene chair, together with a detailed training program. The follow-up after sixteen months showed an 83% reduction of transfers performed in an unhealthy way. The total number of transfers had decreased by 39%, and the number of transfers requiring two members of staff were eliminated. This would allow them to strengthen an "Optimised Care Program". Staff reported to be more satisfied as unnecessary or potentially dangerous transfers had substantially decreased due to a more efficient, ergonomic way of working. The investment in the Carendo multipurpose hygiene chairs and consequent efficiencies allowed reallocation of one full time caregiver to other care duties, significantly impacting on the ability to provide person-centred care.
