Will you make "the shot"? Choosing a picturesque backdrop can absolutely 'make' a shoot, but something that often gets overlooked is...preparation. If you want to do a shoot at a well known landmark, make sure you do your homework BEFORE you arrive at your location. When you shoot on public property its not a problem (minus a few on set "extras"), but once you set foot on private property - that's a different matter entirely. In most situations, just asking is enough. But beware! There are some places which charge a fee for photo shoots. If they do, you'll need to make sure the photos are worth the cost. What do I look at first when I'm setting up a shot? The background: To me it’s just as important as the foreground. 1- There is nothing in there that is going to steal the show or move your eye away from the subject 2- The space behind the head is quite clear and nothing interfering with the profile 3- The background should also help set the scene and tell the story 4- if I can get a light source behind the subject, it really helps to brighten up the background and also give a little rim light to the person This photo ticks most of the boxes. Do you have those pictures taken at social occasions, that you thought: 'errrrr this is not the best photo of me'. When my friend took a quick snap of me while we were out in a bar, I told my friend it was unlikely to look fab given the lighting. My tip: if the primarily light source comes from below your face, it is unlikely to look flattering. Try to move to a corner with more ambient lighting. It was fine for a casual hangout photo to record the occasion.
