Hospital Update: Well…its been over 1 year since The Joint Commisson newsletter (Feb 2023) focusing on the “Hidden Hazard” within the Kitchen exhaust ductwork of your local hospital. And… virtually nothing has changed or improved regarding the oversight and policing of this very important hidden fire hazard that exists above the ceiling of your medical center. Why? A few reasons: 1. Understaffed: don’t have the staff to go look to see if your contractor is doing their job. 2. Presumed compliance: Hood sticker is current, means its compliant. Hood is shiny and the filters are clean, must be fire safe. 3. Local AHJ came through… and we passed. 4. Haven’t had a fire in 30 years… so we must be doing something right… Contact Bare Metal Standard to give you a free report on the current condition of your system and its fire safety. It’s a good 1st step. (Free inspections are only available within our regions, see our website for our regional reach). MT (Picture below is a Hood plenum of a serving line hood (burgers & fries) loaded with grease, in a Type 2 AC duct, no duct wrap with 40 ft of horizontal ductwork over the dining area to an EF in the rafters of the boiler room). Customer said, “No thanks”, we are good, our report then went to the local AHJ. Help me, help you…

Being prepared for an emergency is necessary for senior living as well as nursing homes. After conducting a hazard vulnerability assessment (HVA), a plan can be developed for incidents that are likely to occur and incidents as they occur. Another decision that must be made is whether to evacuate or stay put in the event of an emergency. Having the best information will help you make the best decision for your senior living community. Emergency situations not only require having the best information on hand, but also having open communication with staff. Cornell’s InFORM™ I A Mobile Nurse Call system helps your staff stay in touch through voice or text communication. Reminders can also be sent to staff about emergency preparedness drills as well. How does your facility manage moisture in the resident's bed? With our optional Moisture Assistant, the sentida 7-i can help. If there is moisture in the bed, a silent alarm is transmitted to the nurse call system— ensuring your resident isn’t embarrassed by an audible alarm. The Moisture Assistant detects moisture in the bed at an early stage, sends a notification, and helps to better protect residents from maceration and moisture associated pressure injuries. • Early awareness of moisture in the bed can reduce the length of time the resident is in a wet bed— reducing the risk of pressure injuries and resident falls • Reduced risk of skin maceration • Real-time notification allows caregivers to respond in a more timely manner versus manual rounds • Increased well-being of the resident • Reduced risk of resident falls by allowing housekeeping to clean and moisture from the floor before resident attempts to leave the bed #skillednursing #moisturemanagement #pressureinjuryprevention

Singapore Govt Hospitals - Meals Hospital N has nurse assistants to go round the beds to take orders for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next day. The nurse assistants are temporary contract staff members who are housewives and work during the day to help patients to shower, change diapers, feed patients, etc. When my mum was staying with Hospital N, I would browse through each menu (Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western). I would first look for Oven Baked Fish in the Western Menu. If that is not available, I would look for any fish dish (e.g., steamed fish from the Chinese Menu, assam fish from the Malay Menu, etc.). The last option is to pick other dishes from the Chinese Menu (e.g., fried pork, minced pork). There is a standard vegetable and fruit dish, and an option to pick either coffee or tea. When other family members stayed with Hospital S and Hospital T, I was surprised that they did not have the same process of allowing patients to place orders for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was assigned based on race (e.g., Chinese food for Chinese patients). From the re-engineering point of view, Hospitals S and T save resources from taking orders from patients. This is what re-engineering folks love to report (i.e., savings). However, Hospital N provides better service if we look from customer / patient point of view. Remember - don't just focus on savings. What do you think? #Reengineering #Customerservice #Hospital
