Emphasizing the need for a level playing field in the Mediterranean Sea. 🐟 As the first-ever Maltese representative on the PECH Committee, I am committed to ensuring fairness between European countries and third countries in the Mediterranean. Who knows me, knows well that I mean business on this topic. 😃 RFMOs and international bodies are key to achieving social, economical, and environmental balance in the shared sea basin. I aim to give Maltese and Gozitan fishermen a strong voice in negotiations on fisheries laws, prioritizing dignity for this vital sector. 🇲🇹🇪🇺

Congratulations to the Taiwan Tuna Longline Association Pacific Ocean Tuna FIP for advancing from prospective to comprehensive on FisheryProgress! This FIP's end goal is to achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, while addressing both environmental and social aspects of the fishery. This FIP is one of three partners FishChoice and Ocean Outcomes are working with on a pilot project to better integrate fishers in implementing the Human Rights and Social Responsibility Policy. Part of the policy involves fisher awareness of rights, and this FIP will test new ways to make sure that this process is robust and inclusive. This involves making sure that FIP managers know fishers’ languages, preferred modes of communication, home communities, and levels of access to WiFi on fishing vessels. All of this is to ensure a better work environment, and better fishery overall.

CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments, aimed to ensure that international trade in specimens of animals and plants included under CITES does not threaten the survival of the species in the wild. This is achieved via a system of permits and certificates, and varying degrees of protection to more than 38,000 species. NGOs have played active roles as information providers, technical advisors and advocates of various stakeholder views, and contribute useful information to CITES Parties to strengthens the decision-making process. #SustainableUse #Benefits
